It didn't hurt, I'm sure. Perception is everything in this post-modern world, and the more people were willing to accept the image of a black president, the more willing they were to support the idea that. Before the Iowa caucuses, more blacks were supporting Hillary as their only viable candidate. Once they saw Obama win a state, they started to rally behind him. It takes breakthroughs like this to convince people of the possibilities in front of them.
Obama had to run a stunningly successful campaign to overcome the racist divide and the advantage of the Republican party still then in control of so many of the state municipalities. Remember that Bush never actually won an election fairly. Obama fought tooth and nail for every vote, unlike Gore and Kerry.
And for those who think anyone would have won against McCain and Palin, remember that none of the last three Democratic candidates won the majority of the white vote. This still boggles my mind. The dumbing-down of the nation has been a linchpin of Republican control here and needs to be reversed as soon as possible; one reason education is a priority for Obama's administration.

President Palmer in 24 certainly had ethics and executive behavior nailed. I never had any problem with the idea of a black president, and just wondered when it would finally happen.

Now that blacks have mainstreamed, maybe women will be next. -

the old timers like ted kennedy and john kerry knew that the american people would always see them as elitists,,so they went and found a token minority,,they had problems with the clintons and the arkansas mafia,,so they sought a smooth talking black man, then using the mao tse tung communist model,,used the generational divide and convinced the younger generation and intelligencia that this would make america better and safer,,not really giving a damn about american but that winning the whitehouse was more important. and then the democrat controlled congress bullied the media with threats of fcc investigations and no bail out if their media branch failed, like it is. it was the medias responsibilty to spread the doom and gloom until the american people bought into it,and elected their candidate...but i bet the media didnt realize that with all the fearmongering that it cause america to quit spending, and the banks quit lending,,and the dems kept smiling,,,watch out how fast it all turns around in the media now,,except they will have successfully singlehandedly elected a communist and collapsed our economy..

Wow thanks for the laugh. Mao huh? Naw, all it took was a warm body to beat the Republicans after their man nearly destroyed everything that made this country great. But we will be great again as Barack revereses many of GW policies.

mrr, I agree that elections are carefully staged, and this one was no exception. I hope Obama surprises Soros and the U.N. and advocates for the U.S. Constitution and spreading its freedoms around the world.

I'd like to see Obama focus on the emancipation of all people in the world--black, female, what have you.
I think the economy was on the skids for a long time. Comptroller General David Walker warned the government repeatedly for several years before finally quitting last April to try to warn the people when congress and the executive branch wouldn't listen to the very expert they had hired to give them the knowledge they needed to guide the action they needed to take. Cheney actually asserted no one knew!
I think it was a combination of ignorance and greed that collapsed banking and housing. Obama spoke of personal responsibility. I think that's key. We need to hold both consumers and capitalists accountable for their actions. -

If this is true, I think it's now time to have Women, Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans as presidents in movies so they too can have their 1st!

The days of the old white president may be a long time coming around again as they wait for all others to have their shot at it.
Orrrrrrrrrrrr we can just pick the best we have to pick from regardless of all that other stuff? -

I'm sure having black actors portray presidents in films has had some influence in the overall acceptance of a real-life black president. but that influence was probably only marginal at best. I'm going to give credit where credit is due, and that's not to Hollywood, but to Obama himself. The guy was simply a great candidate, smart, organized, disciplined, as well as the breath of fresh air we so dearly needed. Had Obama not been a quality candidate, no amount of black actors in film could have helped him win the presidency.

This election was a job interview, not an exercise in social acceptance or a case of life imitating art. -

Now somebody tell Obooboo he has been elected,he won,he is president, now it's time to go to work.So far he has managed to install seven to ten tax cheats for his cabinet, borrowed, and wasted trillions of dollars, and not one company that i've heard of has rehired a single employee.I know he has only been in office three months, dear lord will our country look like after six months.Bashing Bush can only take him so far, after that he need to fix something,if he knows how.
