It didn't hurt, I'm sure. Perception is everything in this post-modern world, and the more people were willing to accept the image of a black president, the more willing they were to support the idea that. Before the Iowa caucuses, more blacks were supporting Hillary as their only viable candidate. Once they saw Obama win a state, they started to rally behind him. It takes breakthroughs like this to convince people of the possibilities in front of them.
Obama had to run a stunningly successful campaign to overcome the racist divide and the advantage of the Republican party still then in control of so many of the state municipalities. Remember that Bush never actually won an election fairly. Obama fought tooth and nail for every vote, unlike Gore and Kerry.
And for those who think anyone would have won against McCain and Palin, remember that none of the last three Democratic candidates won the majority of the white vote. This still boggles my mind. The dumbing-down of the nation has been a linchpin of Republican control here and needs to be reversed as soon as possible; one reason education is a priority for Obama's administration.
