Yes, I think circumstances placed opportunity for Obama. It was provided by Hillary.

It was really Hillary's to lose to start Obama on his path. The neuterization of McCain helped seal the deal. The republican party just couldn't let McCain be McCain. Unfortunately, it opened a door to McCain saying yes when he should have said no.
Obama did do well to stay distanced from much of the name calling during the primary and general election.
Let's see what happens after the honeymoon is over as he really doesn't have time to enjoy any of the afterglow.
