I hear ya N2N, no breed has a worse rep than Pit bulls, but I tend to think it's the owners more than the breed. IMHO if Irish Wolfhounds were popular with the 'gangster' and wannabee types, it would be that breed that was always in the news for attacking neigborhood kids and other dogs. ANY dog that is mistreated and neglected is a danger to itself and those around it, both of which I suspect are at the root of 90% of all Pit bull attacks.

The pictures are nice. The problem is what the dogs were bred for. Every so often one will go berserk and attack for no seeming reason. Until that is bred out of them they will continue to be unsafe. Most will have no problem but the unexpected very vicious attacks are a problem. The ones I have heard the details of do not happen for any discernible reason except the person or dog did what to other was nothing but to the Pit Bull was a reason to attack. This trigger is probably only in some of them but that is throwing the dice with peoples lives to have one. You are betting that your dog is not one of them.

That's really not true Endo. The link below explains that myth. As aidenag said, it's the owners, not the breed.
This article in an excellent read for dog lovers, and those afraid of pit bulls.

I had one named Pete. I got him from an animal shelter when he was about 2 years old and he was great never seen any aggression! The only problem we had with him was he thought he was a lap dog. We had to put him down 2 years ago due to cancer but he lived 14 happy years. We just got a Bernese mountain dog about a month ago she is 10 months old, she is incredibly smart and a quick learner and very gentle for such a young dog. My 8 year old daughter is able to walk her around the neighborhood.

Pit bulls are very sensitive souls and love deeply. Unfortunately they have been bred to fight, and they do have to be trained (look at the Dog Whisperer's pit bulls!) to behave around other dogs. We have had two loving female pit bulls and when each died, it was a wrenching family loss. Right now we have a pit bull/German shepherd mix named Girl, and she is our angel dog. She was a stray, and it's as if she was sent to heal the loss of all the dogs and cats we've ever loved. She is obedient, loving, funny, sensitive, wonderful!

I think the breed needs to be outlawed! Yes, there are many responsible pit bull owners, but most of them are not. I live in a small east Texas town and these dogs are extremely popular among the thugs and outlaws who literally use them as weapons. Two weeks ago my daughter's cat was killed in our own back yard by two pit bull's that were allowed to run free in our neighborhood. I went to the police and the dogs' owners were issued three citations per dog including fines for not having rabies shots! The owners gave up the dogs when they were told they would face even more serious fines if they got out again. The other day when I drove by their house I noticed they have a new pit bull chained up in their yard. My gun is loaded and ready and if I see it out of it's yard I will shoot it. There are small children in my neighborhood and instead of my daughter being heartbroken over the loss of her pet this could have been a parent losing their mind over the death of a child. I think you should have to show proof of financial liability and pay a substantial fee for a license to own this breed.

I am a doctor who frequently treats
Reply
people after dog bites and I have
personally found that about 75% of
the bites I have treated over the
last 30 years have been from pit
bulls. They (and a few other breeds)
are more dangerous than most breeds
but of course that doesn't mean that
ALL pit bulls are bad.
It's a statistical thing. Let's say
that 90% of them may not be dangerous,
but even 10% would make them much more
dangerous than most other breeds. They
are a dangerous breed because they have a
higher RATE of attacks than most other
breeds.
