Suit: Man died after being jailed for parking tickets and missing chemo »
Posted By BronxBomber 9 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsUnpaid parking tickets proved fatal for a terminally ill Queens man who died after callous cops locked him up for four days for a minor traffic offense, a lawsuit claims.
Glenn Seldon, 50, was battling advanced colon cancer in 2007 but still hoped his chemotherapy regimen would make him well enough to go on a family vacation being planned for Hawaii.

Because there is nothing wrong with that.He broke the law.I see alot of this crap on here.People think they have no responsible for anything they do now-a days. If to blame any one here is to blame both parties. The man for not paying his parking tickets and the cops not for asking about his heatlh needs. But then again by being not responsible for one self, only means that they lie often. But I do feel for all parties here.

The best defense against this sort of thing would be if his survivors (if he has any) could SOAK the COP in question (PERSONALLY!) by means of a LARGE court judgment. Sadly, it is probably more likely that what they would end up doing is soaking only the TAXPAYERS, and the COP would go scott free.

Unless and until there would be some MEANINGFUL painful consequences to the person actually RESPONSIBLE for the sort of negligent homicide involved in such a case, these kinds of things will continue to happen from time to time.-

Did you take the time to think your comment through? I am a street cop, if you let one person go who said he had a medical condition, within a week, everyone you arrest would have the same sickness. I am not a doctor. When a suspect is sent to jail, they are screened by nurses, and other medical specialists. Why would you want to sue a COP when it isn't even our job. COPs don't work at jails and prisons, corrections officers do. It's easy to get angry and make comments, but if you stop and think alittle......

Here is a prime example of the Police department in large Cities and especially New York City. Remember the Broom Stick up the rectum by Policemen While the person was in Custody incedent with the now Police Cheif of Los Angeles Mr Bratton. When most people are given a Gun they think they Rule the World and can perform any kind of Illegal act as long as they are in a position of CONTROL. Every time these incidents happen the City where it took place , The person in charge of that Department should be required by Law to help Pay a portion of the Law Suit every year for 10 years no matter where they go to work or sell their property to help pay. Then they would not allow their lower class get away with this CRAP.

For one the cops were doing their job they should not have to judge who get pickeup and who does not. They just need to follow the law. Second the man should have paid them i am sure a long time ago and never even put himself in that postion. What ever happened to personal responsibility in this country. Last the fault has to be on when they booked him why it was not known he needed help. That was the area of issue not with the cop doing his job. Again lets not forget the person that built up them tickets to put them in the position to begin with.

He should have paid his tickets. His illness is not the fault of the government. He was terminally ill and he died. He may not have deserved to die of cancer but he did deserve the tickets. The police just did their job and his family who might have helped him, deserve no award, in my opinion.

How cares about those darn tickets. They could see the man was sick. If someone is dying of cancer it shows all over them. I'm sure he also told them he had to go to chemo and that should at least been a reason for them to check his story.

There is absolutely no excuse for this type of crap. They need to be sued and maybe if they are sued enough they will pay attention to other people who have medical issues and need care. If he was going to die anyway that still does not change a thing. He should have been taken to a hospital. The police are supposed to serve and protect. I guess they forgot that part.

It's amazing how harsh the comments are. People who have committed crimes involving millions to billions of dollars are released and not held accountable, people who commit crimes of violence and abuse are released everyday. A parking ticket is just that, a parking ticket, it wasn't a moving violation where someone could have been hurt or killed. Repeat DWI drivers are released only to hurt or kill someone as a result of their irresponsibility and addiction. My thoughts are this, I hope the police officers and anyone who feel this harsh action was acceptable NEVER have a loved one, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, die an accelerated and/or lonely death because they didn't pay their parking tickets! What goes around comes around.... God be with you.

How exactly is it the cops fault?? Can you imagine the stories people tell to stay out of jail?
Reply
They were given orders to pick up this man. Do your job or get fired. I am sure it is easy for those of you on welfare to say you would have gotten fired before you put the sick man in jail, right? -

I'll tell you how. DO YOUR JOB!!!!!!! A good cop would check out the story by calling the facility where he was supposed to have the chemo. Now their ignorance is going to cause some real problems for them. -

why didn't he see a judge. cops cannot just put you in jail and forget about you. they have to take you in front of a judge or magistrate. also, didn't he have any family to help him. they could have gone to the jail with a letter from the doctor or called legal aid. something is missing.

Who are all you stupid, crazy, idiotic numbskulls?? The man would not have been in jail to begin with if he had taken care of his responsibilities.

It seems that as each year goes by another group of crazies come out of the woodwork screaming that it is the policemans fault that a man died because he felt the world owed him a living or that he felt that he was not responsibile for his own actions!!!!!!
How can you not understand the fact that, HE WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN ARRESTED IF HE HAD TAKEN CARE OF HIS OWN RESPONSIBLITIES!!!
iF YOU ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO PUT YOUR SELF IN CONFLICT WITH THE lAW, YOU GET WHATEVER COMES TO YOU.-

I hope you get arrested some day just to prove how terribly wrong you are, grifkin1. You have no idea how much bull exists in the prison/jail system. Just so you know...I have never been arrested but I know others who have and it came as a shock to me as it will to you when it happens. Believe me, it is just a matter of time for all of us as this country comes up with more and more laws to arrest their citizens for.

When your freedom is taken away from you, whether it's your own fault (failure to follow the law) or otherwise, the person or organization keeping you must shoulder the responsibility to provide access to basic levels of care based on need.

In this case, the state may not be responsible for the cost of this guy's medical care, but there was no excuse under the sun for them to prevent him from receiving all of the necessary care in a timely fashion. The Police are guilty of negligence and should suffer the consequences. While the individual(s) directly responsible should be held accountable, that doesn't excuse the Police Department for having a system that allows one or two officers the ability to approve or deny medical treatment. We as taxpayers and voters are responsible for the Police and also bear the responsibility for their actions. If you want incidents like this to stop, light a fire under your elected officials and let them know how you plan to vote them out of office if they don't take action. Demand that those responsible (and their superiors) get fired, lose pensions and face charges and jail time for criminal negligence. -
