This is a day that will bring the people of the world together like no other in the history of the planet.
Not only because the hope of Obama's success is almost universally shared but because his election comes at a time of such world-wide stress and crisis that, should he fail, the world would be brought to its knees.
In my memory there has never been an election of such crucial significance and one that the whole world depends on - and also that literally almost the whole world will be watching today.
Anyone who fails to give support to the new President is consciously tempting the direst of fates - the potential complete breakdown of the world order and other dire events - impossible to predict in their precise detail but almost certain to be catastrophic.
Its perhaps too much to hope that ALL the naysayers will put their prejudices to one side and share in this day with total enthusiasm, but it is encouraging that Obama meets this day with the support of 79% of the US public - after triumphing in a hard-fought, frequently rancorous campaign with only a little over 50% of the popular vote. That means that 60% of those who voted against him are willing to accept the new reality and to patriotically support their President, regardless of the fact that he was not their choice.
The rest seem to all be here on propeller, having a disproportionate effect on the nature of the discussions here.
It is my heartfelt hope that, on this day at least, they will join with the rest of the world in appreciation of an unforgettable day and a day of hope for mankind. Not doing so would be their sad loss.

Thanks for the invite to share the inaugural, Gamahuche!
However, it does not look like I can get there.

We* piled into the hummer and told the navigation system to lead us to Prague.
The directions seemed easy; go west on highway 66, take a right to Alaska, cross the Bering straight on an ice flow and then straight, straight across Siberia, through central europe and you can't miss it: Czechoslavakia!

Well you might not know it, but apparently there is no Czechoslavakia.
We passed right thru in the night. All the signs said Czeck Republic and I thought that was some kind of a bank.

The hummer gave out in the Chunnel and we left it there.
We are hitching our way home in a freight container.
The other containers all have chinese immigrants; many of them are enthused about the inaugural, and about 50 of us are watching on the captain's cell phone which we borrowed don't tell.

Point being: some things are good no matter where they happen, and are shared by all, no matter where they are.

      Cheers!

*I assumed you would be ok if I brought the whole family and the dog and some neighbors

Sounds like you bought one of Senator McCain's used hummers. His navigation system still said there was a Czechoslavakia.

I didn't see the Soviet Union, either, when I drove past Kamchatka; but it was dark and I was tired. It might have been where we stopped at a macdonald's to let the dog run around a bit.
Of course he got into the playground tubes and bit some kid who was too old to be in there anyway.

Really it was just like home.

I'll get back to you with the directions, CRY!!
I definitely had enough beer laid in for your whole crew and I'm a bit worried about whether I'll be able to finish it all by myself. The dogs will help of course..
Now I'm all set here at home - it looks like there are at least a couple of hundred people there in Washington..
Now my problem is how to watch and chat at the same time..
It seemed like a piece of cake in theory but...
I can say that this is the first time I've been as excited about a political event since the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.

Well, I like ocean liners too but I can't see that wacking a big ship with a champaign bottle is the same as inaugurating a decent prez for god's sake.

That's just one crymtyphon's opinion, of course, and there may be others although
            not as good naturaly.

They whacked Queen Elizabeth with a champagne bottle?!?

Is that why she waves that way and is never amused?

I think he meant the eponymous ocean liner..
And it was Queen Victoria who was not amused!
A very different character and a very different time!
Well now the ceremony's done and I do have to say that the Queen's Coronation WAS more fun.. :(
Even though I scarcely saw it.
It was the first time I'd ever seen TV - and coundn't see it properly and complained bitterly about it
It turned out that I needed glasses.
HOWEVER - too big and marvellous to miss was Queen Salote of Tonga, larger than life in every way, who insisted on riding wothe her carriage open though it was pouring with rain and while everyone else was virtually invisible her beauty and smile overflowed - it brings a tear to my eye to think of it now.
This event I don't think will carry the same level of emotion.
It seemed more about restraint, for the most part.
Obama was fine and even when he fluffed a line it made a virtue of the whole scenario,
Feinstein was good and enthusiastically convincing; the blots on my card were the Reverend and the "poet" whose contributionwas way down on the minus scale.
GWB looked sad. Almost enough to raise a feeling of sympathy.
Will the people who were there remember it as a highlight of their lives?
By and large I would think not BUT that would undoubtedly change IF Obama can succeed in rescuing the US.
I was surprised how very concensual opinions were about what very deep do-do the US is in.
The tendency in Olde England would have been to keep a very stiff upper-lip and not let on at all.
I'm not in touch enough with the new England enough to really sense how it feels there, only having spent a few days there now and then in the last 20 years.

                    Oh well.

It is hard for events of moment, to compete with the recollections of childhood.

England is still there; ruling the waves, not being slaves,
the royals misbehave while the Peers conclave and ravens croak on Arthur's grave, burma shave.

Well it WAS a more cheerful moment in time, though England - and all of Europe - was still recovering from the 2nd WW and I was recovering from having been transhipped from my Czech homeland into this strange environment.
There was a strong sense for honest and respectable behaviour which seems to have completely vanished in a morass of corporate greed and street anarchy.
Mostly hearsay, I admit, but Prague has been plagued by British stag parties which are totally out of control. They seem to be moving on to cheaper places now, praise be.

Well Gama, this is a UK newspaper after all - this means they mostly regurgitate "topics" defined by the american media. Other parts of Europe have much more differentiated opinions about what Obama means.

This part of your screed is not acceptable:

""Anyone who fails to give support to the new President is consciously tempting the direst of fates - the potential complete breakdown of the world order and other dire events - impossible to predict in their precise detail but almost certain to be catastrophic.""

Obama deserves no more support than he earns. Given that he has appointed many prior war criminals to his government, he seems to have decided to continue the military imperialism that has bankrupted our country and trashed our constitution. That deserves zero support.

Give him a chance hyper. He had to get elected first and there are some things you can't take a stand with or the media will make sure you are never in the news again.
It wont be as easy for Obama to fix the things Bush screwed up as it was for Bush the screw things up in the first place.
You should know that any hint of fairness toward Palestine during the campaign would have evoked the rath of the media. His best hope is for the truth about Israel and Palestine to eventually reach the people.

                  Gama,

I certainly hope Obama has success in leading the government in solving at least some of the problems we face. And I'm glad that science is probably coming back in some form.

The speech was a bit "goddy" for me, and I didn't hear much that really moved me except the phrase about personal responsibility and that about reaching out to people of the world. I hope those actually grow legs and we really do see change that is more than just rearranging the political furniture.

Glad you found the day unforgettable and inspiring.

As Golda Meir has said, there will be Peace in the Middle east when the arabs learn to love their children more than they hate jews.

Of course that also goes for Loving their Shiite children more than they hate the Sunnis, or loving their Sunni children more than they hate the Shiites.

As for the fundamentalist muslims like the Iranians and al qaeda, they hate everyone, especially their girl children and wives.

The mission of Women Against Shariah is to prevent and outlaw the imposition of shariah law in the United States for both Muslim and American women as either a parallel legal system or a replacement for existing laws. Additionally, we hope to empower women worldwide to resist shariah.

This would be a great start to the global emancipation of women. If we stop it before it gets started, I think we will have fewer problems than Europe has had.

I agree with Crespi that we need to formulate language that covers all extremist religions with respect to women's rights as fully human beings.
