Dirk Powell & Friends, "Oui On Peut" »
Posted By jovial 9 months, 2 weeks ago in Arts & Entertainment(USA) This last Presidential campaign saw a plethora of musicians who crated music videos to express their hopes about the future of the country and their candidate. The largest outpouring from the world music community by far was for President Elect Obama. Prior to the election it would have appeared biased to show these on Link TV. However with the elections behind us, that constraint is moot. "Oui On Peut" is a particularly charming domestic effort from Louisiana, filmed at the Whirlybird in Opelousas. The song was written by Dirk Powell, a masterful multi-instrumentalist, here playing bass and singing. The band has a great lineup, starting with Christine Balfa, daughter of Dewey Balfa, the great fiddler who brought Cajun music to international audiences. Jeffrey Broussard, formerly of Zydeco Force adds the soulful vocals and squeezebox riffs, and Linzay Young, of the Red Stick Ramblers (and a fine cook too-- is that him making the Gumbobama?) holds down the fiddle and backup vocals. The party atmosphere is convivial, the beat is down home, and the harmonious blend of Cajun and Creole music underpins a joyously inclusive message.
