Yes, Virginia, it's true. First rumored in early January, but at 3x the number, there are indeed layoffs happening at Microsoft. The number set to join the employment rolls is 5,000, as revealed in Microsoft's earnings statement for fiscal Q2 2009, released before market opening on Thursday.

      as if microsoft has ever done it tough. its figures don't appear to justify this. this looks like an opportunistic strategy that uses the current global economic crisis as cover to cut dead wood staff. something microsoft could not have ordinarily done under normal circumstances without attracting a negative backlash and could only have otherwise achieved through a much slower attrition rate, ie. resigning staff not replaced, etc.
