It as a way to unite Nashville and prevent the kind of extensive translation services.

It was a way to legally discriminate against those who do not yet understand English.

What makes you think you have the right to say that someone who's moved to this country with good intentions to learn English should not be able to participate in government because they have not instantly learned English?

It's more anti-immigrant, racist, exclusionary tactics by the far right. That's what it is.

It unites only English speakers and leaves out the rest--even those who are trying to learn. And as noted in the article, the cost of the special election was almost 60% of the entire amount spent on translation services in Nashville.

i actually think countries should work hard to protect their languages.

this, obviously, isn't a problem with english

but i would support measures from other countries to put their languages first.

I actually think people should work hard to learn other languages besides their "primary" tongue --- it is culturally BROADENING. And with respect to SPANISH, well THAT IS THE SECOND LANGUAGE OF THIS COUNTRY --- spoken to some degree by FULLY 30% OF EVERYONE HERE! That statistical fact derives from the HISTORICAL REALITY that much of the territory of this country WAS TAKEN OVER FROM MEXICO well over a century ago --- which resulted in a VERY LARGE INDIGENOUS HISPANIC POPULATION AND CULTURE HERE.

Good for Nashville. It's difficult enough for immigrants with limited English skills without government sponsored immigrant bashing. Instead of uniting the city this would divide the city. The amount of money saved by not printing documents in other languages is negligible. The documents are already done and people who speak these languages already work in city offices.

ok.. so voting is only done by Citizens.. right? to be a citizen, one must speak English.. right? So, elections should be held in english only.. right? Anyone else following this? If not.. do you need a refresher in English?

I don't believe the ability to speak and understand English is a requirement to be a citizen. While passing a citizenship test (in English) is required, doing so doesn't necessarily mean every new non-native citizen will be able to understand all government publications.
