Obama Speaks Out On Israel-Palestine »
Posted By tehranchik 9 months, 3 weeks ago in Political NewsPresident Barack Obama is calling on Israel and Hamas to take steps aimed at ensuring that the cease-fire that's in place in Gaza will endure. Weighing in on the conflict for the first time following his inauguration, Obama said that going forward, Hamas must end rocket fire at Israel, and Israel must "complete the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza." Although those steps were taken this week, low-level violence has marred the fragile cease-fire.
Obama said his administration will support a "credible" system of ending smuggling into Gaza.
He said he's "deeply concerned" by the loss of life among both Israelis and Palestinians, and by the suffering taking place in Gaza. He said his heart goes out to civilians who are going without food, water or medical care.
He said Gaza's borders should be opened to allow aid to come in, with "appropriate monitoring."

So far, Obama's missed the point on Gaza
It would have helped if Obama had the courage to talk about what everyone in the Middle East was talking about. No, it wasn't the US withdrawal from Iraq. They knew about that. They expected the beginning of the end of Guantanamo and the probable appointment of George Mitchell as a Middle East envoy was the least that was expected. Of course, Obama did refer to "slaughtered innocents", but these were not quite the "slaughtered innocents" the Arabs had in mind.
There was the phone call yesterday to Mahmoud Abbas. Maybe Obama thinks he's the leader of the Palestinians, but as every Arab knows, except perhaps Mr Abbas, he is the leader of a ghost government, a near-corpse only kept alive with the blood transfusion of international support and the "full partnership" Obama has apparently offered him, whatever "full" means. And it was no surprise to anyone that Obama also made the obligatory call to the Israelis.
But for the people of the Middle East,....

clearly this Obama guy is a complete failure. its been three days already and he hasn't done anything! where's all this change he was talking about? what is he waiting for? what, is he going to wait for diplomatic measures to take effect over an extended period of time while he tries to convince people to change decades of behavior through carefully worded diplomacy and difficult negotiations?

he remained silent for 3 weeks while israel attacked gaza. his somewhat belated excuse? it's not his place to speak out.... just yet. yet he spoke out on other matters to which the same excuse should have applied. remember mumbai?

then when he finally speaks, now as the most powerful man in the world, he leads from behind and safely chants the inoffensive chorus that's already been sung while the rest of the world is now into the 2nd verse and is already writing the 3rd.
again.... too little too late. this is not a question of gratification. this is a matter of balls and backbone. he's been careful not to show either lest he offend..... anyone
