The sales of Early British and Irish Paintings came at a pivotal moment in the art market as buyers and sellers began to adjust to the new economic climate created by the credit crisis. With the benefit of that knowledge, Sotheby's experts were able to better estimate the works on offer. Those estimates led to a smaller sale measured by total volume but one where works were able to achieve prices commensurate with estimates.
