Comments for Obama to GOP "I Won" »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 11 months, 1 week ago in Political NewsPresident Obama listened to Republican gripes about his stimulus package during a meeting with congressional leaders Friday morning - but he also left no doubt about who's in charge of these negotiations. "I won," Obama noted matter-of-factly, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

Where were all these whinners when Paulson went running to the White House for a bail out benefiting only the financial institutes??
Why aren't they more focused on what is going on in the banking industry with our Tax payer money???-

Maybe you don't watch the news or anything but a majority of the Republicans didn't want the bailout. If I remember they were calling it socialism. It was all over the news.
Reply
A bigger question is why Obama supported a bailout of Bush's buddies? Maybe because Obama has some of the same friends. It's amazing to me as well that Obama would pick Timothy Gheitner and no one cares. First the guy didn't pay taxes. Secondly and the biggest issue, This man supported the failed policy's of the BUsh administration because he supported Ben Bernanke. Ben Bernanke lead us into this mess and now we are going to hire someone with the same policy to fix it?
I guarantee in four years, Obama will not be Jesus anymore.-

They weren't whining then EE because Paulsen is a good 'ole boy and fellow repub.

Face it the Republicans aren't liking that they're no longer in charge and that changes are being made, have been made and will be made that will correct a lot of damage they allowed because they didn't have the cajones to stand with those who dared tell Bush no.-

The original bill was shot down by a group of both republicans and democrats. They added FAT to the bill and all of a sudden it was worth passing. They did this right in front of our faces. Democrats and Republicans!!!!
So who is watching this money!!! Who is this Financial committee and how many times have they met? Try and find that one out.
If they have you pointing fingers, they are playing you for a SMUCK, they played us all for smucks.

Now we will get a trillion dollar deficit and the liberals complained about the $400 billion of Bushes deficit. Hypocrites. Where is the money coming from to pay this bill. How many years into the future will we be indentured to pay for it. Gee I am sounding like a liberal of just a few months ago. Silly me.

I notice the bipartisanship that Obama talked about has gone up in smoke with the words "I won."-

The 1.2 trillion projected deficit is thanks to Bush. It was projected during HIS administration. It's amazing how, four days into his serving, you're trying to lay all of Bush and ChenyCo's **** poor policies at the foot of someone else.-

In fact he is inviting Republicans to include a package of tax cuts for small businesses as part of the stimulus plan and most are pleased with the bipartisanship. There are some who will hold out for ideological reasons or grandstanding, but this bill will pass. The country needs it and were in no mood for Republican games. If the GOP has any interest in retaining what seats they have left, they will start responding to the public need and pull their heads out of Limbaugh's ass.

EE -- go back and read the reports from October up to when the bill finally passed. While the dems had the votes to pass the bill on the first ballot, it didn't pass. Why not? Because the blue dog democrats and the majority of the republicans wouldn't vote for it. Back comes Pelosi with a bunch of arm-twisting and buying everyone off (further inflating the cost of the package) and they were finally able to get enough votes to pass it. The percentage of Republicans that voted for the first bailout was LOWER than ther percentafage of Democrats that voted for the bailiout.
Reply
While it is true that Bush and his cronies engineered the first bailout, it was a very tough sell to the majority of the Republicans in Congress, and never has been accepted as a good idea by the majority of the Republicans at large.
When articles have been posted (quite a few of them, as I recall) denouncing the bailouts and explaining out the first New Deal was a bust, they were, for the most part, posted by more conservative members and blasted by the more liberal of those among us.
So, for you to insist that we consevatives were supporting these bailouts before the inauguration is not only wrong, it's insulting.

I like what he says regarding "Reform with Oversight, Transparency, Accountability", that should of been done the first time around, not a blank check. Can you imagine the amount of money that was hijacked by the top banking people because they knew that was their only chance at getting compensated. All ready they are refusing to answer where the money went to.

EE == just as you were not necessarily being "hateful" when you disagreed with what Bush was doing, neither are those of us who disagree with things that Obama is doing necessarily hateful either.
Reply
I think it's perfectly valid to question the wisdom of putting people who were directly involved in the institutions that melted down in charge of fixing them. That's not a personal attack it legitimate concern.-

I still believe the original plan made the best sense: buy up the toxic assets to clear the balance sheets of the financial institutions. I think banks are drowning in strip centers, office buildings, commercial projects that will not be productive for several years and will hamper new lending.

The Government then OWNS those distressed properties and can sell them at a (hopefully) profit in a few years.-

The Republicans stressed that they want to include more middle class tax cuts in the package.
Where was the Republicans concerns about the middle class for the last 8 years? Funny that they had NO concerns about destroying the middle class then, but scream to high heaven about them now. That in and of itself turns my stomach, the only tax cuts they have been worrying about was Corporate America and the ultra wealthy, and killing the middle class! Now they want it to look like they have our best interests at heart! HOGWASH!-

How about the fact that they held the line when the Democrats wanted to increase taxes. Ignoring the normal tax and spend of Democrats in Congress are you. Well part of that is happening now. Spend, spend, spend. Later will come the "Oh my gosh we need to raise taxes!!!" Just like Clinton did. That was the larges tax increase in history. Want to bet they will want to make an even bigger one?

What was all the big talk McCain did about taking care of Wall Street and ignoring Main Street? It all had to do with Bushies complete disregard for the middle class for the last 8 years, which is part of the reason we're in the shape we're in today.
Reply
Bush got so carried away with his spending and demanding a blank check, (which he got the first 6 years of his presidency), that he completely lost nearly 12 billion dollars which hasn't been found to this day. In the meantime, that 12 billion could have provided medical coverage for uninsured Americans with billions left over, but he fought that tooth and nail. I wanted to know where the 12 billion went when it disappeared and i still want to know what happened to it today! Strange thing about you republicans, you disregard the complete disappearance of nearly 12 billion dollars, but complain one dollar spent by a Democrat. -

I have no problem with lower taxes as long as you pay the bills. Repubs, ever since and including Reagan have cut taxes and run up large deficits and debt. Dems raise taxes and pay all the repub bills. Repubs blame the dems for taxes, dems blame the repubs for debt. And the cycle continues.

I am so sick of this lie. The PERCENTAGE of the tax cuts to the middle class was larger than the PERCENTAGE of the tax cuts to the rich -- quite a bit larger. The fact of the matter is that if I am only paying $10K in taxes per year, I can hardly get a $1MM or even a $100K tax break. The fact is that under Bush's tax cuts more low income people received a 100% tax cut -- they were completely removed from paying income tax. Obviously, those who are near the bottom of the income ladder weren't paying too much in taxes anyway, so it gets really hard to give someone who's original tax bill was $500 a $10,000 tax cut.
