A story published earlier this week on the BBC site suggested that "women are advised to limit alcohol intake during pregnancy."

In my opinion that is bad advice, and irresponsible reporting, the safest choice is to stop drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
Can you imagine what effect a shot of tequila or any other alcohol has on that tiny developing fetus?-

This is one reason I support abortion at the woman's discretion in the first 12 weeks, and than afterwards if the baby has genetic, developmental defects or disease, or for the mother's health or life.

In fact, I'd like to see addicted women (alcohol, drugs) offered intrauterine devices or sterilization to avoid pregancy altogether.

I thought all women knew not to drink alcohol during pregnancy. I guess I was wrong. I hope you get a lot of readers for this article. As a mother I want to say this to all you prospective mothers out there, drinking alcohol during pregnancy is just plain stupid. I'm sorry to use the word stupid but this subject really gets me upset. Alcohol during pregnancy can do a lot more damage than just premature birth. It can goof up your child for life.

Back in the 1950's, some doctors thought smoking during pregnancy was good, because it made the baby smaller, making for an easier delivery. My great grandmother was having problems with her stomach, the doctors exposed her stomach to gama rays. She was a "big, strong, strapping woman" before the gama ray therapy. When she died at age 85, she looked like a small, shrunken up doll. I'm surprised she lived as long as she did, but, I bet she would have died sooner IF she wasn't so big and strong before the experiment with gama rays, taking it longer for her to starve to death. She lived about 30 years AFTER the gama ray treatment.

I know a young person who is now 19 years old and was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is something that is truely sad when you realize that although his body did mature in a near normal way his mind is at a 18 month old level and his vocabulary is only about 4 words, he has a bit of a mobility problem and is completely unaware of any dangers that surround him. His mother said that she did go on a real binge once when she was expecting him but she admits now that that once was one time to many. I was told once by a doctor that the placenta has the ability to filter out many things to protect the fetus but there are some things that are not natural to the human body, things like alcohol, nicotine, some antibiotics and many drugs. People I feel receive alot of information regarding sex education but any information after that seems to be lacking.

A baby born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome can have serious handicaps and therefore could require a lifetime of special care. There is even some research that indicates that women who plan to get pregnant should get alcohol treatment before they even conceive.
