GENIUS is said to have two forms. There are ordinary geniuses, whose achievements one can imagine others might have emulated, so long as they worked extremely hard and had a dollop of luck. Then there are extraordinary geniuses (Mark Kac, a mathematician, called them “ magicians” ) whose insights are so astonishing and run so counter to received wisdom that it is hard to imagine anyone else devising them. Einstein was one such genius. Paul Dirac, whose equations predicted the existence of antimatter and who died in 1984, was another. He was quite probably the best British theoretical physicist since Isaac Newton.

Lovely quirky story, full of twists and turns.
Ahh! How I relish English writing sometimes!
"He was quite probably the best British theoretical physicist since Isaac Newton." That's quite a claim!
But the miserly father is really the most peculiar character..
Potentially a five-act play, encapsulated in six short paragraphs.

He was a genius who was socially aloof, and, he loved comics and Mickey Mouse cartoons. He was strange indeed. Speaking about super brilliant people, I always find it depressing to the "5th Power" when they off themselves. Not only do WE lose someone who could possibly benefit the world, but, in their self-destruction they send a cold, creepy, unnerving message that they KNEW something. But, I think of it this way. IF God can exist, and not off "Him"-self, I'm not going to WORRY about it. Thank God I'm STUPID enough to believe in a God who is eternal so I don't off MYself like so many super geniuses have done before.

Diric did not commit suicide; and I can only think of a single 'super-genius' who ever did; and that was under government pressure.*

A good physicists will not willingly leave the world he studies; the movie just keeps getting better.

Pauli said of Dirac; There is no god; and Dirac is his prophet .

That's pretty interesting... though not many physicists on the list. A scientific mind is likely just as susceptible to emotional health disorders as anyone else. One would think they would be more likely to recognize and seek help for such a problem than the general public...though certainly they are not immune. Interesting subject though.

Yes Tesla and others unknown. Sometimes I wonder what brings out certain talents in individuals. One of the more interesting stories of Genius was about a person who had an IQ of less than 100. He is the man who was the inspiration for the "Rainman" movie. As I recall he was born without a part of his brain and the brain developed "shortcuts".

        Amazing story.

        Good Article Radio
