FTA: "The Gallup Organization survey found 68 percent of Americans approve of Obama's performance as the nation's chief executive. That's a number near the high end for new presidents, but short of President John F. Kennedy's 72 percent in 1961.""

But to be honest I feel it is going to get really bad economically before it gets better, I don't think people realize how hard it is going to be with 10% unemployment, all the small business going out of business and all the corporations losing money, this is a serious mess that bail outs can't fixx.-

I agree again Girlfriend, i don't think there's enough money to replace what Bush borrowed and spent in the middle east, on top of what he and Cheney pocketed.

You know, it almost looks like Bush deliberately left this country in the mess he did. I mean, when you think about it, his whole presidency seems to have been about revenge for Daddy. Saddam because of Daddy's old vendetta, and America because Daddy lost to Clinton.. I know it sounds like another conspiracy theory, but i have been feeling this way for a long time. All of his actions were so deliberate and calculated, it reeks of revenge. -

Eagle_Eye: You're right it has to get bad economically. The only cure for recession is recession itself. Recession is a natural and neccessary part of capitalism where the economy purges itself of wasteful, inefficient, poorly managed companies. The companies left afloat, will be the ones that are geared for success in the modern economic workforce. The same is true of the workforce. Our economy needs an overhaul and recession is the only way that will happen. Bush tried to use the Government to save the economy and that proved disastrous, and it looks like Obama wants to follow the same failed course. When will we learn?

What do YOU suggest other than allowing recession to lead to disastrous depression and utter collapse?

I think Americans are very resourceful, resilient, and cooperative when they are treated with respect and told the truth about the challenges we face--economically and otherwise. I think Bush and the GOP did Americans and themselves a great disservice by downplaying the warning signs of practically up until the moment Bush was begging for money to rescue Wall Street. That showed extremely poor judgement, in my view.

Yes n2n. We have a great Treasury Secretary. Just a little problem paying taxes. He signed papers from his employer telling him he had to pay. His accountants told him he had to pay. Halfway through the time this occurred he was audited by the IRS and they told him he had to pay. He just ignored all of them. What a guy. Everybody should follow his lead after all he is now going to be over the IRS.

You have no more worries about Money. Just look at who the Treasury secretary is going to be. Just a little $42,000 tax problem where he ignored the company he worked for, his accountants, and the IRS who all told him in no uncertain terms that he had to pay. Aw so what. He paid as soon as he heard about being nominated for this post.

Obama has definately hit the ground running. So far I'm also very happy with his performance. What scares me is Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. I think that they more than the Republicans are more likely to mess things up for the President. The Democrats in Congress need to resist the temptation to lock the Republicans out of the process like they did to the Democrats when they had all the power. Only together and listening to each other can we heal this nation.

It appears that the Republicans according to John Bohner still want the same failed policies that have caused this economic chaos in the first place so how can you negotiate with an ideologue that support a failed policy? What the Democrats should do is work in a bipartisan environment but stand firm against proven failed policies. What gets me is the same people that are concerned about the taxpayers money wore blinders for the last eight years.

Excellent insight. Throughout his tenure, they bent over backwards to justify Bush's failures or to ask us to await their eventual success or to ascribe blame to the Democrats who were never really in control. Now that Obama has taken office, every opportunity to forecast disaster is seized upon without delay.
Reply
I see a positive momentum building among most Americans that is going to restore this nation's self confidence and hurl us straight into the twenty first century with an emphasis on sustainable and shared prosperity. It can't come a moment too late. As Einstein said, we can' t solve our problems at the same level of thinking we had when we created them. The Republicans are the party of the past. They have yielded the future in deference to stale themes that have no resonance in a changing world.

You're dead on with that one. The Right is more the party of group think and unquestioning loyalty. That is why they have something called "ditto heads" who are proudly self anointed.
Reply
I have my issues with Obama. His unwillingness to support gay marriage being one. I also prefer John Edwards approach to health care versus Obama's and believe he should raise taxes on the top five percent of income earners as he promised in his campaign which he is waffling on now.
Contrary to what the right keeps espousing, most of us on the left don't believe Obama is our savior. Mostly we are just relieved that he possesses a modicum of sanity and decency unlike the moron who just left office. If Hillary or Edwards had won, I would be just as happy. Its like opening a door to a room that was stale from cigarette smoke stuffy air and stepping outside to fresh air and sunshine. Half of my enthusiasm is relief; the other is hope. But that hope is tempered by realism. Obama must navigate the politically charged waters where many Republicans will do their level best to prevent him from succeeding not out of belief that they are helping the American people but out of spite and a desire to see him fail. Just as Rush Limbaugh stated explicitly recently "I hope he fails". It demonstrates his values. He is more concerned with his BS ideology than the welfare of the American people. All who follow this line should be held to account for it by the American people.

First, the recession started in Clinton's administration. In July of 1999 the stock market had hit 11,313, but by March 7, 2000 it had dropped to 9796.03.It went back up some but then the stock market dropped from 10,843 on July 20, 2000 to 9,772 on January 18, 2001 (the last stock trading day of the Clinton era). That is a drop of 13% in the last 18 months of the Clinton Administration, So I think the arguement can be made that it started during the Clinton administration. Second, I don't hear anyone blaming O'bama for the present mess. Plenty of blame to go around. But he deserves none of it. Not so the Democrats, as the heads of the commitees in charge of banking and credit policy were Democrats and pushed the horiible lending practices that lead in large part to the financial collapse.

Just where do you and all of your ilk think the Global vision of your party is going to lead. I'll point out that YOUR previous messiah Clinton signed NAFTA into law. It is a fact that the union auto worker makes around $75.00 an hour when all costs are figured in. It is also a fact that the most efficient auto plant in the US makes a car in 14 man hours of labor. ( a chrysler plant)
Reply
The least efficient is a ford plant which takes around 33 hours.
Do the math! this equals $1050 in labor costs to Chrysler, and less than $2500 for the ford plant. You could eliminate labor altogether and still their price change would be so minor it hardly would be noticed. When a car costs 30 to 40K, and the labor is less than 7% you have no right to gripe at labor costs!
You are going along with the GOP crowd who wants a scapegoat for the current automotive economic mess! Their problems are much bigger than this! -

President Obama has his hands full. To have a 68' approval rating is beyond fantastic. Never, in the history of this country have we witnessed such economic catastrophic upheaval. This is just the beginning. Factor in a 6.5 percent unemployment along with the 6.0 percent underemployed. The only way out of this is to hurry as fast as we can to create new jobs. American companies need to expand their buisnesses here. The minority party is trying their best to stall this out. We have to speak out loud and clear to keep this ship afloat.

I believe that was a story about DHL in Wilmington Ohio. DHL is a German company that was allowed to buy out the local airport with alot of unkept promises to the city. Without govt. oversight this is just one of many to follow suit. I also believe DHL is only keeping their overseas contracts, again another sign of support for American companies that left the US. Since the imports are not being taxed according to law, we are losing even more money.

I know this is a day late and a dollar short but this poll you mention does not add up to 100%. You see, 45% strongly approve and about 15% that strongly disapprove is only 60%. Typical con reporting because there were 23% that approve of Obama's handling of the presicency that would be added to the 45% that strongly approve.

However, Obama’s ratings remain far above those earned by his predecessor. President Bush left office with a final Presidential Approval Index rating of -28 (15% Strongly Approve and 43% Strongly Disapprove). I voted for Mr. Obama even though I'm a Republican, however I'm very disappopnted that one of his first acts in office was a proabortion executive order. Why is killing the unborn such a high priority with liberals? Also, this is really dumb politically for Obama since more than 50% of Americans do not favor abortion. The smart thing for a president to do is to stay out of the abortion issue. It will only divide the country and cause many people to dispise him. Looking ahead, listen to Peter Schiff! He called the financial disaster in the early 2000s and he was exactly right!
Schiff says that spending trillions more is the very last thing the Gov should do. He explains his position with facts and reason. No matter which side you are on... it is time to get beyond the petty bickering and name calling... please don't ignore this!

If you would like to see how perfectly Peter predicted the meltdown, while the other "experts" literally laughed at him, search "Peter Schiff was right 2006 - 2007 (2nd edition)". Over 1 million views and counting!
