What can we learn from animals? »
Posted By Newperson 11 months, 1 week ago in Science & TechnologyA vet at London Zoo says: "Animals seem to have developed a super sensitivity to danger, perhaps from centuries of experience." Scientists all over the world have been trying to find the secret of animal kingdom's sixth sense.
Many people have benefited from this sense, like the man who was shaving in Magdeburg, Germany in 1944 when a cat's mewing made him open the front door.

I felt bad a few weeks ago, my cat came into my bedroom meowing his little head off, and tried to get me to follow him. I kinda thought he wanted fed, but his meows were different, I only stepped out of the room to see if I could smell smoke, or if any stranger was in the house, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, he was so insistent, and tho I'm usually SO in tuned with him, I put him off, thought maybe he just wanted a little extra attention so that's what I did, pet him and said 'what's wrong with you?, come on calm down'. A little while later, I came out in the living room and stepped in water and here a pipe had broken upstairs and there was water all over the TV,DVD, stereo, my Sons game units, our antique buffet...water still running down the walls...it was a disaster.

I felt really bad that I didn't take him more seriously, and I feel bad for the animals that try to communicate with us, but can't in a way we always understand, must be frustrating.

Years ago in the mid eighties, our house caught on fire in the middle of the night. In fact it was in mid January and it was 11 degrees Fahrenheit outside. My cat, Sebastian, saved all of us. He was a big cat -- over 20lbs, a Maine ****. He jumped off the bed and made a howling noise that woke me up. WE only had a few minutes left before the fire came up through the floor boards. The fire department arrived 5 minutes later, as we sat inside the car watching the house burn down.

I am not having an easy time lately and did not really want to respond to this story, because we had to put down our dear pet,Rochester, another Maine **** last Saturday. He had developed cancer at age 13 and it was a great loss for us.
Rochester was always so closely connected to each of us in the family. When I had a heart attack and came home from the hospital, he stayed by my side for weeks. He was a real member of our family and brought us years of affection and joy. A real clown and a sweetheart! It sounds silly to some people who do not understand the connections we can make with our pets, but my whole family has been deeply affected by his loss.-

Thanks for your understanding. Friday night I gave him an IV and I could see that he was suffering. In the wild, nature is ruthlessly merciful; an animal will not live long if it is suffering from illness. Saturday, I had no other choice than to end his suffering. Despite knowing that I did what had to be done, I have felt horrible about it. My wife has had such a hard time with this, also. It's been a hard year. My father passed a few months back too. I have to remind myself that it is okay to grieve for Rochester too!

The day that Rochester died, a Mainecoon litter of kittens were born by the breeder we know and in the middle of March, we will make a new home for Annabel. It is not common that MaineCoon kittens are born in the month of January; so we have accepted the kind offer from our friendly breeder. -

SC, I am so sorry to hear about your loss, some people don't understand the deep impact that our beloved animals make on our lives, and how very special and dear to us they are.

I truly wish our pets lived as long as we did. they truly are our family members. -

SC Sebastian was a hero. What an amazing cat. I've seen the Maine **** cats and they're a little bit bigger for my comfort. No less loving though.

I'm going to just say it. Sometimes our pets are more loved, appreciated and cared about then some people, it's the truth and I would and have grieved just as much for a pet as I have other loved people in my life. Pets are more important to me, then some people are,if that makes me sound like a horrible person, so be it, it's how I honestly feel.

No it doesn't make you a horrible person. It makes you a compassionate and honest person.

I've grieved the loss of three family dogs and two family cats from childhood. Each one was unique, holds a special place in my heart and are missed.
For me my closest friends are those who have pets and take care of them. Gives me insight into who they are.
My kitty nephews owners, my friends, have always taken care of them. They're getting the right food, medicine when they need it, the oldest one fluids everyday, litter box changed daily, teeth brushed, brushed, played with and talked too. And loved. They are some of the happiest cats I know. And the only ones I'll cat sit.

On cats. I've saw an article the other day about a 9,000 year old grave that dug up in Cyprus. A man and his cat were found buried together. The contention that cats and humans only came together 3000 years ago seems suspect to me.
