Giving Back to the Givers in Tough Times »

Posted By myfairlady 11 months ago in News

Teachers, Fire Fighters, Police Officers and Social Workers are all worthy of our appreciation and praise. They serve our communities day in and day out, sometimes with rewards that are not in proportion to their service. It would be great to show our appreciation beyond words, but these days giving gifts is getting tougher. Following are some suggestions of items you can give to these humble community heroes, made affordable by using the group gifting concept.

Great ideas for community involvement that would make a difference in the lives of those that provide the community with essential service.

They are great beings....givers make up for a lot of selfishness.

You want me to feel sorry for police officers, who far from "risking their lives every day" actually work two weeks on the street and two weeks behind a desk? Then they go on strike because they are opposed to drug testing, or some other minor issue which may or may not be a contractual obligation, or part of the job for more than 100 years?

When these people go on strike, they are striking AGAINST joeq public.

In a small town in Massachusetts, the average yearly pay for a police officer, including details, is more than $70,000 per year. I know that in big cities it is much more than $100,000.

Fire Fighters who can actually SLEEP ON THE JOB??? Of course, because they'll be too tired for their OTHER job after their shift.

Sure, teachers should make more (I am not a teacher - overqualified) not only because they have to actually have a master's degree, but because of the actual difference in pay between them and these other professions.

I'd suggest everyone here checkout Causecast.org. They're a web company devoted to connecting you to the exact type of cause that you're interested in. It's important to remain giving in times of need.

You folks need to add someone you have forgotten to your list of "official"-type "givers" (SOME of whom --- as a couple of the comments in this thread point out, are actually QUITE WELL PAID!).

I refer to the good folks who OPERATE FOOD PANTRIES and SHELTERS --- some of whom devote themselves, and have long been doing so, selflessly.
