A French mining engineer who traveled widely on business, Babinsky published the ultimate cult classic among cookbooks, Gastronomie Pratique: Etudes Culinaires , in 1906 under the pseudonym Ali-Bab. Notoriously difficult to find (a heavily abridged English language edition, published in 1974, is long out of print), Gastronomie Pratique is an astonishingly ambitious book that attempts to put the entire history of food culture, cooking and eating all over the world into a single volume. The recipes themselves, of which there are hundreds, are gruff, matter-of-fact and completely unintimidating.
