I'm holding on to this tiniest glimmer of hope.

After Ahmadinejad's display yesterday of his "clenched fist" (as Obama put it in his inaugural address), it'll be interesting to see if the people of Iran will reject him in their upcoming elections.

Obama may be trying out the Republican strategy of triangulation to divert the support of their people from difficult world leaders...that'd be an interesting idea.

The people of Iran are just as fed up with the little blow-hard as we were with bush. They just don't have any other choice. And remember Ahmadinejad isn't really the one in charge in Iran.

You and Dionys below are right about who's really in charge in Iran. But you've been there, tehranchik--do you know if it's even possible that someone else could gain some measure of power? Or are their elections a total sham?

I haven't lived there for over 20 years Beau. Khomeni was in FULL charge when I left. During those days no one made a move without his say so. The very first president was ousted by Khomeni. So even if your guy gets in - if he doesn't tow the line of the mullahs - he's out. I thought the mullahs were tired of Ahmadinejad - it now seems he could very well be re-elected. Khatami was just a mouth piece too. He talked like a liberal and wanted more personal freedoms for individuals but that's why he's not president any longer. Strings are always being pulled by someone with more power than we know - here and there. I don't think Iran could change without another revolution - they've done it before - they can do it again.

I knew it had been a while since you were there, but you've still provided insight I don't have.

"After Ahmadinejad's display yesterday of his "clenched fist""

People assign him a lot of power that he doesn't posess. He's mostly a figurehead with at least two people ahead of him in the decision making process.
