I would talk to "an old friend of the family" who would gladly pay me 150% of the post-tax winnings for possession of the ticket in a transaction no one would ever know about...

...Then the usual dreams appropriate to the scale of the amount of tax-free cash I would have on hand - That hand which knows one washes the other. -

First, a good attorney - in my case my wife - then deposit the check in my money market fund at my broker, NOT the bank because of FDIC limits, etc. Then set up a LLC - Limited Liability Corporation and issue stock to each immediate family member, etc. and so on. Then, do what everybody is doing as per the posts here. :-)

Depending on the amount, I always have a list, take care of family, friends, buy the historic house I live in and remodel, fix etc the other apts would pay property taxes, insurance and utilities...and travel travel travel. I think I'd still be a bit thrifty tho, I've read to many stories of people getting a wind fall and eventually being worse off then before they got it. I know one thing, I'd have a BIG garage for my car, right now my Son is shoveling off my car, and I do mean shoveling, poor thing doesn't know it's encased in ice under all that snow.

If the amount was large enough and some of our lotteries up here do get up to 30+ million and there are no taxes on them so I could set up trust funds for each of my children, set up a trust fund for the local hospital and set some away for myself. There is one thing that I have always wanted to do on a quarter section of land that we don't use and that is set ap a camping, hiking, recreation area with cabins that could be used by those who normally cannot afford to go camping, maybe it sounds dumb but it is something that I think about at least once a week.
