This is how it starts. Next thing-- the Cubans say Gitmo represents the thin edge of the wedge of U.S. hegemony in the Caribean and Obama is the warmongering representative of this outrage. Rediculous of course. World communism has no greater friend than Barrak Obama but being rediculous never held critics of the US in check. The question is, will our new president have the guts to face the slandar, or will he give in to the wishes of the Chomskys and other schollars of defeatism who advocate retreat from the world.

So how exactly did it come to be that cuba ended up with a lot more friends in south america than the US?

It really seems that the only "friends" the US has in latin america is colombia, panama, and mexico, with panama and mexico friends because the US holds their countries afloat with a rubber raft of foreign aid in shark-infested waters.
When people realize that latin america is a bigger trading partner, with more importance to the US than the whole of trade with the EU, it will probably be too late to be a good neighbor.
And some of those drug producing countries - it seems they've been keeping US banks afloat with (gasp!) DRUG MONEY.
