I've submitted this for all the cats and dogs lovers here on propeller. Please lets not turn this into a war as to which furry one is better.

I love them both, was fortunate to have both in my home growing up (cats and dogs can and do get along and quite well. They'll defend the other one too.), and love both species.

I love animals and have had many different ones--even livestock. Most of my dogs and cats have played together and slept together (in the bed with us!) and the cats and dogs also got along great and played and hung out with some of the horses/ponies. They all are wonderful family members.

We lost our cat and our two dogs this past year--from old age. They just wore out. They were absolutely my best friends in the world besides my DH.

But a colony of feral cats needed to be dealt with, so I trapped and neutered them all, and we adopted the last two that didn't get adopted by others. They are wonderful, and 10 months old now. We adore them.

      Thanks, C-M.

I love people who fix their animals, especially outside ones. I can't remember how many cats just starting out with 2 can produce in their lifetime, it was somewhere in the millions over 10yrs.

A great story. Loving my animals as I do, it's easy to understand why they went to such lenghts for their dog.

My name says it all. Dogs are my preference and have the expensive little addiction to showing them, but I've grown up around animals all my life. I've had cats, dogs, parakeets (gave those up because I'm lethal around them), a horse, rabbits, and a ferret. Some of my best memories and "stories" involve animals. They are integral to my life and my identity.

How far do you go for your pets? very simple answer for me,as far as you can.

My cat fell out of the window early one morning, and was terrified, he was 'lost' for 4 months, every single day I looked for him, my ex BF said," how long are you going to look for that cat?" I said, 'as long as it takes'. Thankfully after 4 long months we found him really by a stoke of luck, he had been trapped in someones basement for 4 months, just 1 block away. I had always been more of a dog person, until I wasn't allowed dogs where I lived, it seems now, I love every pet I have a little bit more, maybe as I age, I appreciate them more...I don't know, they just add so much to our lives, I can't imagine not having a cat or dog.

Great story lvrofwolves. Myself, I had always been a cat person, thinking that dogs were just larger versions of cats, up until last year that is, when I adopted my current poochie. Now I am a fully converted dog person, although I still love my cats too, of course. You are right about them adding to our lives, quite literally too, it has been shown that pets add actual years to a person's life.

SI, I think dogs are more like people and are needier, but cats are such comedians. I think life is better with both!

I agree. Yet another meme struck down! Cats and dogs CAN get along. My cat household did freak out the first time I brought my adopted shepard-chow mutt inside, in fact one jumped on his poor back and dug her claws in. My pooch ran out of the house and I didn't think I would ever get him back in, but with time most of them have learned to get along with a couple forming close relationships.

My cat is 18 years old and diabetic. I give her shots of insulin twice a day. At a recent visit to the vet, they shaved most of her fur off since it became matted when she stopped grooming herself. She looks like a little lion because they didn't shave the fur off her head, feet, or the end of the tail. I am not sure if this was an attempt to be artistic or just a coincidence. Anyway, she is still cute despite being old, decrepit, and no longer potty trained. She still loves attention and if anything seems more needy than ever. I don't know when it is appropriate to put her down since I have never faced this issue before. I keep her in the kitchen and clean up after her messes every day. She only gets lap time in the evening when I come home from work. Its not the best quality of life for her but at the moment I don't have the heart to put her down.

We had a cat who was more like a dog, and we were devastated when she finally passed away just before she turned 18. We had rescued her from the shelter when she was a tiny, very sick little kitten with a horrible case of gastroenteritis and who knows what else. It took months to nurse her back to good health, and I think that made us even closer. I'll never forget her.

I have both dogs and cats. I love them both. My dogs have always been my best friends whereas my cats like me on their terms and theirs alone! There are some days I like my four-legged babies better than my own children!

My cat acts more like a dog as well, he's very needy, unlike a lot of cats, sometimes I just can't get away from him. You know how most dogs, when you leave and come back 5 mins later they're all like 'omg where have you been? I missed you so much, I'm so glad to see you, happy happy happy, you were gone forever' that's how my cat is, and if he hears me out in the main hallway, we can hear him crying like he's pathetic and dying, he only does that when he hears me, what a baby. He doesn't want to go outside, he's terrified of outside.
He picked me at the humane society, when I took him out of the cage, he clung to me and every time I put him back he cried and cried, which happened several times as I looked at other kittens. He was so pathetic, little and skinny and had this problem with his paws, they were so cracked and raw, for 2 weeks I had to soak his paws in water and meds for 5 mins 4 times a day, then put this salve on these wicks the vet put in his paws, and move the wicks back and forth so the salve would go inside. It was horrible, I think that made us closer too, today he's a beautiful shiny coat healthy cat who nobody would have guessed was that same kitten.
The great things love does, right? :-)

I've had a 171/2 year old doxie die naturally, in my arms, a year ago this month that I couldn't bear to PTS either and felt guilty about not making the hard decision. But, I had a 14 year old we did PTS about 4 years ago and that was a hard decision, too. As long as they are eating and drinking and not in pain and get a little love from their person, that's all they ask from life.
