When it was finally obvious that the Bush sponsored gravy-train-for-Iraq was over, the Iraqis did what was necessary. They got their act together and finally (after five-plus years) started to protect their own country.

libsr - You do not really grasp the fact that the entire Iraq invasion itself is an immoral mistake. The WMD "evidence," the establishment of democracy are just smoke screens for Bush, Cheney, et al, to push their neoconservative, colonialistic, arrogant agenda on the entire country and the MIdeast.

Then the whole war turned from "Mission Accomplished" to total disaster. Nothing went right. Bush (thru Bremer) dismantled the entire governmental infrastructure. There too few US troops. The insurgents were entering Iraq freely. The 2 sects were at war w/ each other and w/ the US. Our equipment was inadequate. The oil pipes were sabotaged repeatedly. Local imams ruled supreme in their little enclaves. The few allies that sent a few troops withdrew one by one as the war spiralled down.
It was in this context that Bush belatedly changed tactics and sent in the surge. Not to gain vistory, but to salvage some respectability and give the corrupt and weak puppet government some breathing room in which to organize and coalesce their organization and power. Now the thrust of end phase of the war was not "Mission Accomplished" but rather an honorable withdrawal, helping the Iraqis stand up so that we could stand down.
The surge was a resounding success - but not towards victory. It was a success because it did what it was supposed to do - stabilize the deteriorating war condition. That's all it was meant to do. Petraeus was successful in the limited role the surge was intended for.
There were also a number of confluent factors that helped tamp down the violence. Moqtada al Sadr agreed to a cease fire about the same time. The US Army started paying many Sunni militia to help us fight insurgents. The US also launched an assassination program aimed at the insurgent leaders. Most ominous , however, was the fact that most of the local neighborhoods finally segregated themselves by sects so that there were fewer occasions for violence to flare up.
With the surge the troop numbers the number of US troops went from 140,000 to 160,000. With great fanfare and publicity, Bush then announced that the troop numbers would decrease -- back down to its original number.
Petraeus himself said he did not like "to use terms like victory or defeat. I am a realist."-

Will Bush ever apologize to the country and the world for mistakenly invading a sovereign country with made-up evidence and lies?

Will he ever apologize for the 4300 US deaths, the 600,000 Iraqi civilian deaths, and the 4 million refugees?
Will he ever apologize for letting Osama bin Laden slip thru our grasp?
Will he ever apologize for allowing the Taliban and the al Qaida to surge back into power and threaten the stability of both Afghanistan and Pakistan ?
Will he ever apologize for alienating Iran and removing Saddam Hussein, allowing Iran to become a nuclear power and the prime military power in the region?
Will he ever apologize for not protecting the Iraq oil lines better so that Iraq could resume and increase its oil production and pay for the war like it was planned originally?
Will he ever apologize.....Oh, forget it. He won't

Such ignorance of facts. This non stimulus package will cost the government more money that the Iraq wars and Afghanistan put together. All for Democrat boondoggles that have been blocked by Bush. Obama gave Pelosie the green light and she charged ahead with a massive spending bill that only 15% will be spent this year according to the CBO.

Due to their laissez-faire and less government philosophy, the financial crisis has cost the US economy a total of 8.3 trillion up to mid-2008 (lost housing values, savings, investment, and pension assets) and 2.8 million jobs in 2008 alone. The projection is another 2 million jobs lost in 2009 if nothing is done. Bu now the economic loss is obviously greater (Idon't know the current total).
All due to Republican boondoggles and mistakes. You, of course, will try to blame it on Clinton and the Democrats again. But all this happened with Bush's hands on the wheel.

Those that can come home before the next Super Bowl will be able to come home because of the surge and the subsequent military and political management. They certainly won't be coming home because of anything Obama and the Dems have done.

Iraq is no longer the major flashpoint for world war because the U.S. went in. However, if the U.S. pulls out precipitously, it will become one again.
These simple facts are widely scoffed at within these pages. That's ok. Most of the time enlightenment comes slowly.-

You would have done that supporting a strongman such Saddam? You would have supported the U.S. or others re-arming Saddam's Iraq to prevent Iran from taking the south, the Kurds going independent, followed by Turkey taking northern Iraq while crushing the Kurds?

After 8 years, headlines from Iraq don't carry a lot of weight, Slate.

The coverage was way down long before the election.
And there are fewer bodies being shipped home, - a fact I feel is good and yet somehow the expression of it leaves something out.
But the stories coming from Afghanistan/pakistan are getting grim.
