IS THIS OBAMA'S KATRINA? »
Posted By pc25 11 months ago in NewsI guess what with Kentucky being a red state the heartless Barack Obama and FEMA can't be bothered helping the suffering Americans trying to cope with a massive ice storm that has left them powerless.
In some parts of rural Kentucky, they're getting water the old-fashioned way — with pails from a creek. There's not room for one more sleeping bag on the shelter floor. The creative are flushing their toilets with melted snow.
At least 42 people have died, including 11 in Kentucky, and conditions are worsening ?

Life after ice storm dire, getting worse in spots
FTA
Local officials were growing angry with what they said was a lack of help from the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In Grayson County, about 80 miles southwest of Louisville, Emergency Management Director Randell Smith said the 25 National Guardsmen who have responded have no chain saws to clear fallen trees. -

The headline of this story admits that Katrina was a disaster for Bush. Very good. I think conservatives are finally admittting that fact. They can no longer in retrospect blame it on the governor and the mayor as they for a long time have done.

Funny, pc...trying to compare something like Katrina (with several days notice that it was coming) to the ice storm in Kentucky, which no one knew the severity of until it hit.
Reply
I'm not questioning the hardships and grief the people in Kentucky have experienced, but trying to compare the two is ridiculous.
FEMA appears to an arm of the government that just doesnt work well under pressure. It worked terribly under Bush, and doesn't seem to be off to a great start 2 weeks after Obama has stepped in. I do think Obama has to look long and hard look at FEMA, and either re-structure it or start all over with it.
But leave it to pc's partially coherent explanation, that Obama's enjoying the 80° temperature in the White House...is that laughable or what?
Keep trying, pc...maybe within the next 8 years you'll find some story on hotair or jammies, or some other credible site that's worth posting...LOL...-

I live just outside of Lexington and we have individuals out with chain saws clearing roads so that people can get food and medications. Everyone is helping each other. We have had people in our house for a week because we were fortunate enough to keep our electricity. The local news atributes up to 24 deaths to the 'ice storm'. We are, as I type, recieving another dose of snow.......... already have 3" and still going strong. It is 18 degrees and all this when the last storms ice hasn't completely melted. People in this state do need help. It is beyond the scope of local and state committments. I am here and I see. It is like a war zone out there. Trees fallen everywhere and people pleeding for help. Now another storm on top of this misery. :^( -

I guess after reading 8 years of how the Neocons circle the wagons to protect Bush, you have pick up some of those habits. You state it appears that FEMA is not off to a good start, yet have you heard of any leadership from Obama yet? It is in all of our best interest to put pressure on our Government to do their job. Stating that this is not a legitimate story I think the people dying and those affected might have a different take on that.

I AM IN KENTUCKY, i lost power for a couple of days, it was a nasty ice storm, but the day after the storm President Obama declared Ky a disaster area and FEMA is here now taking applications. Emergency Food Stamps are being issued as we speak, for people who lost food, and money is being provided by FEMA for people who lost more than food.
There are some people here who are still out of power, but they are the ones that are so remote and with so many huge trees down, the power lines are nearly impossible to get to, but they are working on it day and night. They have also brought in crews from several other states to work with LG and E (our local power company) to get everyone up and running. Shelters have been opened up state wide, either in schools, churches etc to provide people with warmth and shelter as well as food. Many people chose NOT to leave their homes, life is about choices.
Less than 50 lives lost is NOTHING in comparasion to Katrina, but why do i expect you to understand that, all you know to do is make excuses for Bush Co.
We lost 2 very good friends during this storm to carbon monoxide poisoning because they chose to put a generator in an attached garage rather than ventilate it properly, life is about choices, and it's not the president's fault that people make poor choices.
In our area alone there was over 200,000 people without power and now it's down to less than 7,000. That's pretty good progress, in light of the fact that there are still people displaced because of Katrina!

Fly over the whole state in air force one; and wave to the people.
Obama is busy gettting his cabinet together, getting the stimulus bill passed so the
country can start to recover from your previous advice to it.
He is doing his job.
If you feel FEMA is not doing its job, - tell us what you think it should be doing.
Does it need more money? Are you calling for more National Guard ?
Should the focus be on temp shelters, or restoring electricity, or clearing roads? Should vouchers be given for energy bills, or hotels, or should extra pay be given to road crews ?
All that stuff is being done; across the whole state.

Days after Katrina, the Prez was telling us everything was fine, FEMA was doing a great job,
- while we watched families sitting on their roofs staring at a drowned city,\
and listened to horror stories of survivors packed into the darkened super dome,
and bodies lay rotting in the streets.
Think you can compare Bush's response, with Obamas?
Do so.

Its interesting you compare an ice storm to katrina. Seems Obama singed emergency legislation the day after it hit and the extent of the problems made known. Instead compare to Bushs response to Katrina. Oh wait yeah he was out playing golf trying to raise donations to the GOP. Where was Obama during the storm? In the White House. When Katrina was predicted to be a cat 5 storm aimed directly at New Orleans several days before it hit where was Bush? off on vacation. When the levees broke and new Orleans was flooded where was Bush? Off on vacation. FOr the ice storm where was Obama? In the White House where he was suppose to be to take charge. ROFLMAO, keep spinning PC its pretty apparent when the right has nothing they start making up disasters in their mind.

Is Obama even aware what's going on in Kentucky? I know he's very busy between trashing Wall Street and Rush Limbaugh, but could he at least acknowledge these poor folks and get them some help?
Time has a good article today on the extent of the disaster in Kentucky
Kentucky's Ice Storm: Worse Now That It's Over
Life has come to a standstill in Kentucky, and it's difficult to imagine just who in the Bluegrass State had the more miserable Super Bowl weekend.
For utility crews who worked overtime through the weekend — battling subzero conditions Friday and Saturday — the challenge was not just repairing a few downed lines, but instead rebuilding a ravaged utility infrastructure from the ground up.
As for state officials, the weekend involved a rapid reassessment of just how dire the situation had become. Speaking out the day after some local municipalities decried a lack of federal or state emergency relief, Gov. Steve Beshear described the fallout from last week's ice storm as the state's largest-ever natural disaster. He then activated every last member of Kentucky's National Guard, dispatching all 4,600 Guardsman to assist with the statewide crisis
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,187...
The extent of the problem is staggering
When are people going to learn that FEMA is a dysfunctional agency
Bad enough that Obama hasn't said one word but where in the world is Janet Napolitano? Although there is talk that FEMA will become an independent agency again, it is still part of Homeland Security
Looks like Napolitano is going the same route she did with illegal immigration and the Mexican drug cartels in AZ - ignore them and not deal with the problem-

I learned that first hand after Ike rolled into the gulf coast in September. Also during Katrina.
Though as with Bush it's not Obama's personal fault, the silence of the left is deafening after what they've put Bush through after Katrina.
Too bad the left on this site won't stand with us and voice their outrage as loudly as they did Bush.-

Yes, FEMA is very dysfunctional. It was turned into an absolute mess under 'brownie', and the department of 'homeland' security. But that's what happens when you appoint someone who has a background in horses. Of course Obama should have fixed it by now. After all, he's had two whole weeks to fix everything. But just to allay all the 'concern' from those who showed SO MUCH worry over the good people of New Orleans, Obama is planning to remove FEMA from its current placement, and wants to bring back Witt to manage it. Witt, the fella with a background in disaster planning who cleaned FEMA up under Clinton.

There are some problems with Witt that may crop up if he is appointed

Ex-FEMA chief profiteering on Katrina?
Witt’s firm charges Louisiana double its costs for subcontracted services
n the traumatic days after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco turned to one of the most respected names in emergency management: James Lee Witt, the so-called Master of Disaster. But an eight-month investigation by NBC News into the performance and billing practices of Witt’s firm, James Lee Witt Associates, raises questions about profiteering, cronyism and possible falsification of records by one of Witt Associates’ subcontractors.
Blanco hired Witt Associates to help Louisiana’s stricken communities work through federal red tape and to help manage storm debris removal. The governor’s move was praised as a necessary step to getting the overwhelmed state on the road to recovery.
But the state’s open-ended no-bid contract with Witt Associates also raised concerns about the financial implications of privatizing disaster relief.
In an October 2005 New York Times article, Witt was clearly sensitive to the notion that he might prosper from the Katrina disaster. “I just don’t want anyone to say that we used this as a way to profit or to try to get new business,” he said. “I just don’t want that.”
And during a taped forum at the National Press Club the following month, Witt said emphatically, “I’m not charging Louisiana anything if I’m not doing something for Louisiana.”
Nevertheless, according to information obtained by NBC News through public records, internal documents and interviews, Witt’s company has made millions of dollars from sizable markups on work performed by its subcontractors.

I don't ever remember anyone wondering why the president wasn't going to visit us. I don't think the Guard was called out we just dealt with it. There were shelters set up for those that needed it. I'm pretty sure the people in KY can deal with it too. They are a tough bunch down there, they can handle it as well. pc25 is making a mountain out of a mole hill. you know i wasnt going to respond but, i just cant help myself being from kentucky. what do you think people did before there was electricity or running water or let alone inside bathrooms. the people of kentucky are resourceful, and as far as people getting water from creeks if youre high enough on the mountain it is the best water there is, just be sure you look up the hill and make sure no possums or other dead animals arent in it. i dont think the "red state"applies here, have you ever been to kentucky and looked up some of the hollers and hills here. some of the electric lines were installed by having mules pull the lines up a mountain side. i guess they may use four wheelers now. when it comes to working on electricity, after you get to it, seems you wouldnt want to be in a hurry. people in this country have endured more times without running water and electricity than they have had it. maybe not this generation, but many before us. in situations like this , we cannot have it our way like burger king, we need to depend on each other and become communities again and lay aside our self centered lives aside and help another human being. thanks for allowing me to share an opinion and get over it.

Fema was supposed to have prepared for a hurricane disaster for New Orleans

And if we bothered to blame Bush, we could;
the present system is still only what Obama has inherited.
If there is a shortage of national guardsmen, or emergency resources, blaming Bush is as easy as it is pointless.
Frankly I think we can skip Bush.

if you are going to apply that standard for performance then you must do the same concerning Katrina. The incompetence of Gov Blanco and Mayor Nagin far exceeds whatever short comings the Governor of Kentucky exhibited. But now we have a problem. This is where the dilemma for the liberal mindset lays. If we exonerate Obama for the shortcomings of the Governor of Kentucky, then we must exonerate Bush for the same shortcomings of Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin.
