Obama preserves renditions as counter-terrorism tool - Los Angeles Times »
Posted By tehranchik 10 months, 1 week ago in Political NewsThe CIA's secret prisons are being shuttered. Harsh interrogation techniques are off-limits. And Guantanamo Bay will eventually go back to being a wind-swept naval base on the southeastern corner of Cuba.
But even while dismantling these programs, President Obama left intact an equally controversial counter-terrorism tool.
Under executive orders issued by Obama recently, the CIA still has authority to carry out what are known as renditions, secret abductions and transfers of prisoners to countries that cooperate with the United States.
Current and former U.S. intelligence officials said that the rendition program might be poised to play an expanded role going forward because it was the main remaining mechanism -- aside from Predator missile strikes -- for taking suspected terrorists off the street

All of a sudden you ranters have to face the reality that when someone takes the office of president they have information that you do not have. Then they act like previous office holders because of that information.
PS. I heard someone who had read the order that Obama signed say that if read carefully the order only applies to Gitmo where none of that happened. Obama gave an order to study closing Gitmo and I bet he will have the same luck that Bush did. He wanted to close it as well.

If Greg Miller is correct, I'm very disappointed in Obama.

On the other hand, on reading the executive order linked to by the article, I don't see anything allowing renditions to other countries. Renditions to the U.S. seem to me to be a different animal altogether--particularly in light of the order's specific instruction to follow the precedents of the Army Field Manual, Geneva Conventions, and Convention Against Torture. That's not to mention, of course, the U.S. Constitution, which I would certainly hope the new president and his attorney general intend to preserve and uphold. -
