If you look up the difference in the signals you may better understand what is happening. It's actually real simple and if you want to continue receiving your signal through the air the only real limitation is distance. Digital signal does not carry as well. you may loose some stations. I large number of the TV's out there will already be able to read the digital signal.

Well, we bought a new LCD HDTV over a year ago and don't have any complaints with that. This is what we watch when we are hooked up to our digital cable tv box.
As for the DTV converter box, we have that on one of our older tv sets with a new digital antenna. We are supposed to be able to receive this digital signal, over the air, with the help of this DTV converter box, from the "Sears Tower" bldg. antenna's.
We live about 15 mins. away from downtown Chicago, so the distance factor shouldn't be the problem; I would think.
My guess is that it's the crappy converter boxes that the govt. is pawning off on people to buy and from what I've been told from a few different stores, sales people, you'll never get as good a picture on a DTV converter box, as you would get with using cable or satellite tv.-

Analog carries better with air as the medium. Its signal is varying wave but constant . Digital is just that. on/off or 011100010101001001 like your computer uses and being digital it be divided easily. you don't necessarily only have Channel 3 but you can have this divided further such as 3.1, 3.2, 3.01, 3.02 all this carrying additional information.
