Battered hard already by the recession and petrified of what’s to come, restaurants are talking sweet and reaching out in ways they didn’t six or even three months ago. They’re cutting special deals, adding little perks, relaxing demands and making an extra effort to be accessible.

    I knew New Yorkers were tough but I didn't know that New York restaurants were so tough also. Good article engineer.

      This trend is being felt all over the country, not just the upscale centers of fine cuisine. I have been in the culinary buisness for 23 years,(18 as a Chef). The Hotel industry is getting a double whammy though, falling reservations mean less people eating in their food outlets. The industry norm is that a restaurant in a Hotel is not expected to make a profit, it is merely there for the convienence of the guest staying at the Hotel. I am currently unemployeed,(by my own choice), the last Hotel I worked for closed lunch sevice, then after I left, closed for dinner also. There has also been a wide sweeping movement to reduce labor by cutting back on hourly employees and having managers pick up the slack.
      If there's one good thing that will come of it, I hope that the private resaurants will remember this crisis, and remain "open" to all customers, and not put their noses back up in the air.

        When any business needs customers, their behavior is much more solicitous. In times of plenty, businesses could almost pick and choose who are allowed to grace their establishments. Now with the economy in tatters, people can't afford to eat out as much; or take those travel trips, spending for restaurants, hotels and travel fares. So if the serve does not live up to the food you're served, there are others who are more than happy to have your patronage.
