  Someone needs to let Congress know so they can stop the subsidies.
  Of course if you think that will happen anytime soon I have some ocean front property in AZ up for sale you might be interested in

    I thnk the general belief is that ethanol got perverted somewhere along the way. It was originally envisioned as being produced from stuff being grown on surplus land as part of a crop rotation program. That was pretty attractive. But growing corn primarily to produce ethanol was sort of too much of what might have been a good thing in moderation. Not the least problem is that corn needs a lot of nitrogen, which comes mostly from ammonia or ammonium nitrate. Both of these need natural gas to be produced. I haven't worked out the numbers; but ethanol can be produced directly from NG or you can use NG as a fleet fuel. Both of these are pretty stiff competition for the primary corn/ethanol route.
    
    Biodiesel sounds intriguing. The major complication is, of course, that one needs a diesel in which to run it. Trucks work fine; and now there are even some pretty good diesel auto engines. Once upon a time, someone in the auto field opined to me that auto diesels could never be competitive with gasoline engines in the absence of heavy subsidies. We may get a chance to see whether that's true.

      I prefer my diesel, and the choices to manufacture it are diverse enough the food crops would not be impacted. As Mntnmans link above shows, and waste oil for the home biodiesel maker.

  I don't think the real issue is the line between gasoline and ethanol, but gasoline additives like MBTE which are a real problem, especially concerning groundwater pollution.
  
  Ethanol is being produced to replace MBTE as a fuel additive, and in this case it's much safer and economical. There is no argument in this case. I think anyone would rather have ethanol polluting their groundwater than MBTE.
