Three simple words: “I screwed up” »
Posted By Spadecaller 9 months ago in Political NewsBeyond former Senator Dachle’s withdrawal from his pending appointment, President Obama appeared on national television to acknowledge his mistake in the process. According to former President George W. Bush, a demonstration of one's "strength" never included the words, "I was wrong." Though, it is by acknowledging misconduct that history portrays the infamous, should it not also be by virtuous conduct good character be praised, as well? How often do members of the press experience demonstrations of humility and accountability by a sitting President?

With haste the press will rightfully criticize the President in these circumstances and Obama’s harshest critics will at best ignore his apologies. Some cynics will insist that his amends were insincere, strategic, and solely political.

The media is usually quick to disparage a public figure’s most glaring shortcomings because it sells; it makes good news and fuels the controversy of partisan politics. And though, it is by acknowledging misconduct that history portrays the infamous, should it not also be by the conduct and good deeds that character be praised, as well? -

Of course this won't stop the whining drivel from the naysayers who will grovel in the dirt to pick the bones of a dead dog if they could call it a [gasp!] socialist.
In most circles a frank apology for f***ing up carries more weight than all the pretending and gaming and naysaying and other assorted bs of the last regime and its braindead acolytes.-

Another interesting facet was that the Senate, which often gets blamed for allowing such beaches in ethics to take place, made Obama and the appointees cognizant of the problem and put an end to it. (Well, apart from Geithner, at least.) Congress doesn't ordinarily get much credit for holding anyone accountable; in this case, it did. And both Demcrats and Republicans were involved.

Actually this story is so trivial thatr it shows our media is still trying to keep us dumb and dependent on state propaganda. There are real issues where Obama has already made fatal mistakes that condemn his administration to failure.

The Anti-Empire Report
Shortchanged and Real Change
Change (in Rhetoric) We Can Believe In
I’ve said all along that whatever good changes might occur in regard to non-foreign policy issues, such as what’s already taken place concerning the environment and abortion, the Obama administration will not produce any significantly worthwhile change in US foreign policy; little done in this area will reduce the level of misery that the American Empire regularly brings down upon humanity. And to the extent that Barack Obama is willing to clearly reveal what he believes about anything controversial, he appears to believe in the empire.
The Obamania bubble should already have begun to lose some air with the multiple US bombings of Pakistan within the first few days following the inauguration.....

I have looked at the summary of the stimulus package and found some good stuff. I believe many look at it and fail to see what is involved to accomplish each line item. I was on another site and posted the summary. I asked the community there to visualize how...who..and what it would take to get each of these suggested programs to completion....and what would be the long term benefits of the project.

Computerizing Medical Records is a good example. Now what does this have to do with stimulating the economy and creating jobs and what is the outcome? I took this one as I am familiar with a lot of the processes. This is a major project which would employ System Engineers, Software Tech, Hardware Techs, Project Managers, Data Input personnel (lots of them) Systems Integration and ongoing support in hardware and software as well as help desks. You take all these rolls and spread them across the country and it "does" stimulate the economy. That being said... the efficiencies gained by having records on line are many.-

When did he say that?
"William Corr, deputy health and human services secretary nominee, was registered to lobby until last year for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a non-profit that pushes to limit tobacco use." HORRORS!
"Melody Barnes, domestic policy council director, lobbied in 2003 and 2004 for liberal advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the American Constitution Society and the Center for Reproductive Rights." OH GOD, SAVE US!
"Cecilia Munoz, White House director of intergovernmental affairs, was a lobbyist as recently as last year for the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group." That B!TCH!
"Michael Strautmanis, chief of staff to the president’s assistant for intergovernmental relations, lobbied for the American Association of Justice from 2001 until 2005." ...and probably NAMBLA too... -

I agree greenmac! He is working diligently to establish the leadership to address our most pressing problems and I find it pitiful that some of his critics refuse to acknowledge that he is working on behalf of all Americans. I studied the stimulus plan and all this hype about the pork is bogus. Most of the plan is pure stimulus; I saw the breakdown. The quibbling about a few minor points (1%pork) is just the smokescreen of elitist Republicans who want to make sure the rich remain in control of the economy that they have destroyed for the vast majority of middle class and poor Americans.

For that particular line item, government can provide the necessary oversight to get the job done, but this particular item is genius in that it also brings in private enterprise. When bidding for all of the contracted and subcontracted jobs, private companies of all sizes will be able to compete.

Another item of serious consideration is the effort to make federal buildings green again. Not only will we be decreasing our demand for foreign oil, but we will also be putting people to work with the necessary renovations. Changes like these are long overdue. -

Some questions.
Reply
What was the mistake he admitted to?
Was it not properly using the FBI to vet these people?
Was it pushing to have these people installed after he found out their tax problems?
Is Timothy Geithner a mistake?
Keep in mind that Timothy Geithner was confirmed when he had a four year running tax avoidance even after he was audited by the IRS after two years and was told to his face he had to pay.
This whole mess with these three has an odor to it. And not a good one. Of course if any of the three were a Republican the liberals would have created a firestorm. Deny that one. Liberals have done it over less. -

Bush has said he made mistakes. I'm not sure Bush during said press conference wanted to 'admit' to a loaded quest asked by a hostle press so they could run out and splash headlines saying BUSH ADMITS he was wrong. In fact, that's what is now happening the Obama. Though it may seem noble to admit being wrong it's not good PR to give enemies something to use against you.

You are repeating yourself and omitting the full story, as usual. While I am not pleased with the choice, he did put a qualification on that, but you are more interested in bashing the man, than helping him succeed. Obama is struggling to find skilled and experienced people in a nest of corruption from both sides of the aisle. So far his administration is the cleanest we have had in many years, but of course that is not something someone as hateful and prejudiced as you would be willing to acknowledge.
Besides Klarissa, having read your previous posts you would not want to admit one good thing about any leader that was a member of the Democratic party.

What new jobs. Only 15% at max will be spent the first year. The rest is Democrat boondoogle payback to those who helped them get elected. Where is the help about the housing problem. Where is the help for the sections of the economy that are in the tank. We are going to build a light rail for $60 billion. Construction will not start for several years because of all the red tape and lawsuits by the tree huggers. Subsidizing abortions employs who? These things are already being done. More jobs in the government. People are not losing jobs from the government. etc. etc. etc.

I watched almost every press conference, state of the union addresses, etc that Bush had and until he admitted that he was wrong for leading people to believe there was victory in the Middle East, i never once heard him apologize or say he did anything wrong. Instead, all i heard him say was "I am the decider", end of conversation.

Obama, having the grace to admit a mistake, shows me his true worth, admitting that he is human and subject to error. To all of the other Obama supporters reading this thread, I ask the next important question which has already surfaced. If not Tom Daschle, then who? Who will take on the role of re-vamping the nation's weak and ineffective health care system in which 40+ million people are without any coverage at all? Who will take over as Health and Human Services Secretary to provide fresh and innovative ideas in a department that has sorely lacked resources? Who is without scandal that can serve the US when we need that person most?

I am so shocked to hear a president admit that any mistake was made. It's been so long since we have heard someone in that office take any personal responsibility for anything that happened under their watch. It's refreshing to hear. That was a long 8 years of nothing bad happening (even though the entire country went to hell) and the decline of our nation being no one's fault. It just happened! The term "Mainstream Media" refers to the members of the journalism community, which vote (or lean) liberal by a margin of 85% to 15%. Certainly a liberal journalist can be critical of a liberal President.
Reply
The Mainstream Media terminology was clearly validated in the last two years by a lack of vetting of President Obama during his presidential campaign. What we are seeing right now, is what happens when you do not vet a candidate.
A simple example of Mainstream Media can be represented by the lack of critical reporting and the slant of the reporting reported. For example, although President Obama has admitted he "screwed up", the stories have been fairly "regal" by suggesting that President Obama is a great President for admitting he was wrong. But yet, at the same time, President Bush has admitted mistakes in his administration and is continually being villified for it in the press and here.
You are not seeing a "Change we can believe in". There are still lobbyists and corrupt people in President Obama's administration. What you are seeing is a "change in how its reported". And that, is being conducted by the Mainstream Media. -

Perverse, no? Especially the "president on defense" part. Makes you realize, if you hadn't already, that objective journalism is an oxymoron.
But I do feel it was incredibly careless not to have ferreted out any irregularities in re Daschle--who, of course, may have simply not copped to his problem until he couldn't not.

Obama did not have the time to go over the tax returns of all his nominees;
he is taking responsibility (rightly) for his staff's screw up.

During the killing of over 95,000 Iraqis and a few more thousand American soldiers in an illegal and ill-conceived war, former President George W. Bush Jr. ran for his second term of office. On October 8, 2004 at the Washington University Presidential debate in St. Louis, Missouri Charles Gibson included this for his last question: "President Bush, during the last four years, you have made thousands of decisions that have affected millions of lives. Please give three instances in which you came to realize you had made a wrong decision and what you did to correct it. Thank you."
Reply
Linda Grabel, who respectfully presented the question, failed to receive an answer, because, acting true to form, George W. Bush, President of the United States, could not acknowledge having made three mistakes, nor could he specify any corrective action he'd taken either. The former leader of the most powerful nation on earth, George W. Bush, became the nation's role model for the rest of us, including those millions of children who were not to be left behind. His message: never own up!
The so-called family-values president left a confusing impression on his ardent supporters, many of whom were parents entrusted with the responsibility of teaching their children the precepts of good character. How enigmatic, therefore, that a majority of the president's most ardent supporters would surely not, as parents, want to instill this as an example of "family-values" in their own children. Apparently it was, according to George W. Bush, a demonstration of one's "strength" to avoid the admission of three simple words, "I was wrong."
President Barack Obama ....what a vast improvement! -
