20 Must Know Facts about Sri Lanka + Map »

Continuing on my trip around Asia, I head to Sri Lanka next.  There’ s a cricket match in Colombo, the capital, going on between India  (see 21 must know facts about India ) and the tiny country that sits about 20 miles off the southern tip of India. It’ s kind of like Major Leaguers playing against a single A ball team. Anyway…

Been there, done that. Didn't realize there were any facts that I MUST know about Sri Lanka other than there are some truly beautiful scenic spots there.

I love this line. "About one million Sri Lankans are displaced 360K due to civil unrest and 550K because of tsunamis."

        From Wikipedia
        ------------------
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, are a militant Tamil nationalist organization that has engaged in a secessionist campaign since the 1970s in order to create a separate Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. This campaign has developed into the Sri Lankan Civil War. The Tamil Tigers are currently proscribed as a terrorist organization by 32 countries (see list). The Tamil Tigers are headed by their founder, Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Tamil Tigers are notorious for their well-developed militia cadre, atrocities against Muslim and Sinhalese civilians, and high profile attacks, such as the assassination of several high ranking Sri Lankan politicians, and the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. They also have the distinction of introducing suicide bombings as a tactic, and have carried out more suicide bombings than Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Al-Qaeda combined. The LTTE are the only rebel organization with aircraft.
        ------------------

This has been going on since 1970 and the public outcry against this has been unheard. Over 70,000 dead and no one seems to care.

This is a beautiful country and good people live there.
