    Basic Instinct?

    I demur.

However, I agree that Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Synecdoche, New York (2008) are some ground breaking in their creative spirit.

I also agree that Charlie Kaufman is one of the most under-rated forces in the movie industry.

Personally, I like instrospection. So many of Woody Allen's movies sit well with me. He also has the offbeat sense of humor that I can relate too.

Seems like fundamentally there are only a limited number of stories, and most are variations on each other. The trick is finding characters that the viewers can like.

              Hmm..

I'd add Brazil.. Until the End of the World.. The Fisher King.. Beauty and the Beast (the original, first one -- not the Disney crap) instead of a Trip to the Moon.. Metropolis.. and.. Dr Zhivago.. Maybe Temptation of Christ (for the controversy)..

Probably get rid of Basic Instinct and the Sixth Sense (come on -- I knew he was dead six minutes into the film) at least.

Agreed, ace. ("Woodstock" would always be on my personal list of "groundbreaking, controversial" films, fr'instance).

I would've added Akira Kurosawa's films to the mix (Rashomon and Ran for example).

They left out the Day of the Locust with Donald Sutherland. That was a film I'll never forget.

Interesting list, subjective, but interesting. The list of criteria for "groundbreaking, controversial" seems to have been added after the films have been scrutinized, however.

I'd call Jim Jarmusch "groundbreaking" as a film-maker with "Stranger than Paradise" somewhere in the mix.

                    Nice, diverting thread. Thanks

Flashbacks aren't particularly new. But I did like the way that they were integrated with special effects in Tim Burton's "Big Fish".

Sadly "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" didn't (and likely never will) make the list.

It's quite an interesting movie, in that Steve Martin is the only living actor featured in the film. The rest are all dead and scenes are constructed from old footage.
