Judges in Place for Essay 101

Pahoa, HI, February 10, 2009: Three teachers have been selected to judge the www.WinHawaiianHome.com essay contest, also called Essay 101. The rules of the contest specify that they shall remain anonymous until the close of the contest to ensure the impartiality of the judging. Local schools in Puna (Pahoa, Keaau, and the charter schools) are to benefit by donation from the sponsor which touched the hearts of the judges who came forth to volunteer their services. One wrote: “I am impressed and humbled by your generosity and desire to give back to this area which is so often forgotten or neglected. This is a beautiful idea and could go so far to help, not only some lucky person who needs a home, but also our deeply underfunded schools. We are in such desperate need of new books… to help them (our kids) become energized and empowered contributors to the world.” The judges had never met the sponsor before they received a letter from Mary Correa at the Department of Education announcing the contest and the sponsors’ search for judges.

The unique idea to “sell” their one-of-a-kind, never-before-lived-in home in a depressed real estate market was born out of necessity after the sponsors, Sheri Smith and John Williams saw a similar idea on national news program. They decided to offer their home as the grand prize in an essay contest after the collapse of the real estate market at the beginning of ’08.

The concept is simple: $101 to enter, write an essay of 101 words or less, the teachers will judge 101 finalists and the winner will be awarded the home, as well as second and third place cash prizes. The odds of winning this home (6000 to one) are better than any state lottery. And a win-win for all: some inspired person wins a home for $101, the sponsors sell a home in a depressed market, the schools get a nice donation at the successful conclusion of the contest.
