It's Still American Hope Vs. Fear, Even in David Brooks' Worst Case Scenario »
Posted By jovial 10 months, 2 weeks ago in Business & FinanceDavid Brooks describes a dark, depressing future that is best seen through the eyes of right wingers who don't have faith in America, Americans and transparent, open, fair, rational economics. Like night dwellers reveling in stygian "safety", the fear the world that clean government and regulations will create. Those nocturnal capitalists may very well face doom-- and it is well deserved. But a new business model is rising.

Things are looking dark for the Bush, neocon, wealth is right crowd. They see no silver lining. All they see is gloom and doom on the horizon. They never understood the message of hope that Obama tried to convey to this nation. So it's no surprise that all their headlines spout news of dark days, socialism, and failure. It's going to take time and a lot of effort to bring these naysayers into the fold of hope and an outlook for a brighter day.

I'm all for just voting them all out and letting them cry over their fallen stock market accounts. I really don't care what the GOP thinks, they are a bunch of mentally ill wacko jobs that are totally out to lunch and out of touch with reality. -

Ironically the naysayers seem to want to aid in destroying the economy...we could easily argue these same backwards thinking greed mad hyper-free marketers caused this mess in the first place. Now they are saying if they can't continue their slash and burn economics, no one should survive. To heII with them.

I find it grossly ironic that the Republicans want to complain that Obama's stimulus bill is nothing more than "spend, spend, spend" and is costing too much, and on and on.

What the HECK were THEY doing the last 8 years?? They wasted BILLIONS of dollars and helped DOUBLE the national debt!
The current Republicans have moved beyond hypocrisy, even hubris. I think they have all lost any common sense and integrity (if they ever had any).-

I know what you mean! If they had such great ideas to save our economy ....................What were they waiting for??
An invitation? Well, their constituants sent them to D.C.
- what other "stimulus" did they need to get busy?
It's Party first - and the welfare of our country somewhere further down on their list of priorities! Ain't it the truth!!

right wingers who don't have faith in America

Gawd! So if anyone on the right sees having this bill shoved down our throats with all the nonsense in it and being a bit upset that the bill (larger that War and Peace) was put out the night before the bill was to be voted on now have no faith in America?
Geeze,,,,, let's not show any Dissent and just sit quietly since we lost the election huh?
And the nonsense about 'well you wasted billions, while we screamed about it,so now it's our turn and shaddup" is silly beyond comparrison. Ccccccchange? Hoooope?-

Well, slate, we're upset at the trillions, not billions, that Bush spent abroad while our economy went down the tubes. We have to hope that Obama gets us back on track, but Bush may have pushed us over the edge. We have to have hope, but the sins of the rabid right have certainly gotten us up sh!t creek. Admit it.

You specifically stated after the election that Obama was your president now, and you would support him. Yet you do everything you can to pray this package does no good. Party politics as usual.

At least this money is being used in projects that are public projects, rather than going into the pockets of Blackwater.
The real irony is, if this does create jobs, and things start to turn around within 6 to 9 months, people like you will say it made no difference, that the economy was about to rebound anyway.
But is it does no good, and the economy is still in the tank after 9 months, you will say "see, I told you it wouldn't work!"
You're as ignorant and one sided as Limbaugh!. -

There's one difference. The economy was ruined by republican economics. Democrats are trying to fix something that may not be fixable. Who do you think should bear the brunt of that? Those that caused it, or those who tried to fix it?

What, exactly, IS "all the nonsense" in the stimulus bill?
Reply
And can you justify the wanton spending while the Republicans were on control of Congress and the White House?
The stimulus bill is no more than than the total TARP bill that was passed - in a HURRY - last fall, and all that money had absolutely NO STRINGS attached and NO accountability required for how it was spent.
The stimulus bill is nowhere near all the money spent on the "war" in Iraq - a war that had no valid justification whatsoever.
How can you justify the DOUBLING of our national debt while the Republicans were in control?
How can you justify all of the no-bid, no-oversight contracts to Halliburton and KBR for shoddy, unfinished, unsafe (12 soldiers electrocuted) work in Iraq?-

Most of the republicans will have nothing to do with ANYTHING Obama proposes. Fine...vote against it. But to pretend that if he'd compromise, they'd actually vote for anything he proposed. Give me a break. The only way they'd vote for anything Obama proposed is if they wrote it for him.

And you want to talk about shoving things down the minority parties throats. How about the 6 years of complete republican control of congress and the white house when democrats weren't even allowed to participate in meetings, were forced to hold meetings in the basement, etc.
Reply
You're just complaining because your party has relatively little power. And republicans accuse Democrats of not being willing to work with them. Why do you think that there are tax cuts in the bill.

I have to admit that I have no idea if the stimulus bill will work. If it doesn't, then we've got a real problem -- a continuing depression and a percentage of interest on the national debt that is going to make future budgets very difficult.

While I think that the last 8 years of the Bush administration have made things a lot worse than they needed to be, I am a bit scared going forward.-

Don't worry Ratskii. First off, you're not alone. Whats needed right now is the recognition that we are all in this together and we will need to resolve this problem with the ideals of community and collective interests and effort. The Republican philosophy of every man for himself and their negativity are going to be short lived in this tempest. Have faith in your government and the mandate of the American people who elected Obama. Truthfully, the stimulus bill didn't go far enough. But it is still a significant victory and a good beginning. We're going to take back our country from those who trashed in the name of greed. I know damn well that we are going to turn this thing around. We have no choice and won't tolerate those who seek to obstruct the solutions.
