Tuvan Throat Singers: Huun Huur Tu at Philadelphia Folk Festival, August 2006 »
Posted By gamahuche 10 months, 2 weeks ago in Arts & EntertainmentJust heard them on the BBC - a trip down memory lane.
They came to play a gig in Prague in 2002 in a club which was flooded by the huge floods of that year and were "rescued" and brought to my small town by a drummer friend who used to own the Tea House here.
And they came and played an impromptu gig in a tiny Gothic Chapel, c. 150 sq ft in size, which is part of my domain and has extraordinary acoustics, and the rest of the time walked around town for 3 days, stopping for herbal sustenance about every quarter of a mile and bounced sound off our Gothic Cathedral and laughed and laughed and gurgled and gurgled and drank a LOT of tea.

I first ran into this kind of music in Mongolia about 10 years ago, where I'd gone to discuss a Conference entitled "Buddhism, Feminism, Activism" which unfortunately never did come to pass because of personal differences.

The Buddhists turned into shamans as soon as they got out of town and it was requisite to pour some vodka on the ground, feedng spirit to the spirits to make them smile. Having Huun Huur Tu to entertain was a great preparation for the arrival of my daughter who'd been missing for too long and then was delayed by the same floods that cost Huun Huur Tu their gig in Prague.-

They didn't 'turn' into anything. Buddhists of this area (along with others) have always mixed their animism with Vajrayana Buddhism. It's fairly common with Buddhism. Chinese Buddhism mixed in Taoism and Confucianism and ended up with Ch'an (Zen) among other mixes, Japan mixed in Shinto with Ch'an and got Zen, Shingon and Tendai among others. Et cetera..
Throat singing's great, though. It can be very beautiful. You encounter it all over that area, and quite often in Japan as well among certain Zendos.
