I first ran into this kind of music in Mongolia about 10 years ago, where I'd gone to discuss a Conference entitled "Buddhism, Feminism, Activism" which unfortunately never did come to pass because of personal differences.
The Buddhists turned into shamans as soon as they got out of town and it was requisite to pour some vodka on the ground, feedng spirit to the spirits to make them smile. Having Huun Huur Tu to entertain was a great preparation for the arrival of my daughter who'd been missing for too long and then was delayed by the same floods that cost Huun Huur Tu their gig in Prague.

      "The Buddhists turned into shamans"

They didn't 'turn' into anything. Buddhists of this area (along with others) have always mixed their animism with Vajrayana Buddhism. It's fairly common with Buddhism. Chinese Buddhism mixed in Taoism and Confucianism and ended up with Ch'an (Zen) among other mixes, Japan mixed in Shinto with Ch'an and got Zen, Shingon and Tendai among others. Et cetera..

Throat singing's great, though. It can be very beautiful. You encounter it all over that area, and quite often in Japan as well among certain Zendos.

        Precisely right!
And that was PRECISELY what I was saying when I wrote:

I know you're a very nice guy but PLEASE try to understand what people are saying before you jump in with your 'factual corrections'!
