Hundreds protest cartoon depicting Obama as a chimpanzee shot and killed by police officers »
Posted By ybdogsct 9 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsProtesters shouting, "Yes we can, shut it down" picketed outside the News Corp. building in midtown Thursday, a day after the company's New York Post newspaper ran a cartoon that they said depicted President Barack Obama as a chimpanzee shot and killed by police officers.
Led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, protesters marched in a loop inside police barricades on 6th Avenue, between 46th and 47th Street, and called for a boycott of the New York Post.
"Go to your newsstand and say, 'Do not sell it in our community,' " Sharpton said to protesters that police estimated to be 500.
One protester was Ashley Ames, 25, who is white. She said the Post is trying to set a racist agenda at a time when the country is trying to move beyond racial conflict. "They take us back," Ames said.

What strikes me about it is.
If they had shown the chimp being shot, with a caption of something like "that will teach the animals not to mess with us."
Then yeah, I could see where they were speaking about the chimp attacking the person.
But the reference to the stimulus bill ??????? How STUPID are they ?????
Pure and simple gutter bigotry!!!! From pure and simple gutter bigots !!!!!
As far as apologizing to the people, hmmmmmph !!!! They should apologize to the president and his family.
Class less, ignorant, misguided idiots will say it is OK to do this, because people portrayed Bush as a chimp.
How many times did it portray Bush as being shot dead by policemen?????
Wake up neocon idiots !!!!!!!! You want a war you can't and won't win ?????
No matter who the person is being potrayed, showing them shot dead by the police is a sign of a Fascist/Nazi Mentality !!
Thank you ybdogsct.
Thank you for bringing this out and showing the ones on propeller who are the type to like this crap. Also for showing the ones who hate this bull crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is assumed by certain elements of the population that the monkey is a metaphorical representation of the Presidentnot only in racist terms yet, for some people, in political terms only.
However some people take it at stated 'face value' as a slam against the US Congress.
It is hard to tell what the intent of the author was when he penned this; but it sure could be seen as a cartoonist's 'double entendre'(ambiguity of meaning arising from language and yes, art is a language, that lends itself to more than one interpretation).-

Purely a jab against congress as the group that wrote a bill that a monkey could write. The Obama thing is ridiculous. Why is it that the liberals are constantly searching for racisim where it is not. Bush was called a monkey for at least 7 years of his presidency, Supreme Justice Thomas has been pictured as a lawn jockey, Secretary of State Rice has been called a skeeza by New Jersey's poet loriat, where was the race pimp Sharpton when that was going on. Where was he and the rest of you liberals when they attacked Michael Steele as an uncle tom?
Reply
What a ridiculous situation we are in. It is like the pot calling the kettle black. And I am sure race pimps can find something racists in that because the word "black" was used. -

Are you saying that the chimp in that cartoon looks like Obama? It sure doesn't to me.
Reply
Are you saying that Obama wrote that non stimulus package? I thought Pelosie and the Democrat caucus wrote it.
This is a liberal ranting about nothing. It was OK when liberal cartoonists used chimps and drew Bus's face on them. That was hilarious but this does not even come close and liberals go overboard ranting and using that excuse to yell racism. -

This is better ignored. Instead, the author is getting all sorts of attention and now name recognition. I don't think any of his cartoons are funny, and I certainly didn't think of Obama when I first saw this one before Sharpton started ranting.

I am convinced the authoring of the cartoon was innocent, the publishing of the cartoon showed a lack of sensitivity.

Knowing the context, I find nothing racist about the cartoon. However, I did not know about the context until I deliberately investigated it. It was poor judgment to publish a cartoon of police shooting a monkey, when 'monkey' is still equated with African-Americans. -

While I found the cartoon to be stupid, I did not find it to be racist nor did I think it depicted Obama. The cartoon clearly states that someone else will have to be found to write the next stimulus bill. Well, who wrote the first bill? Not Obama, he signed it, he didn't write it.

Where I grew up, where BB64 currently lives, African Americans were called porch monkeys. Probably still are in places in the US.
That cartoon clearly is racist and mixed two major events this week into one. Also in poor cartoonist taste.
Mixed the death of Chimpazee by police with the passage of the stimulus bill.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to call this racist. I bet even fifth graders would call this racist as well. -

George Allen (R-VA) pointed at S.R. Sidarth in the crowd and repeatedly called him "macaca." S.R. Sidarth is an Indian volunteer for Democrat challenger James Webb.
'This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere.' George Allen (R-VA) said, as his supporters began to laugh. 'Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.'
Depending on how it is spelled, the word macaca could mean either a monkey that inhabits the Eastern Hemisphere or a town in South Africa. In some European cultures, macaca is also considered a racial slur against African immigrants.
Before he ran for governor in 1993, Allen was criticized for keeping a Confederate flag in a cabin near his Charlottesville home, part of a collection of flags, he has said. He stirred controversy as governor by issuing a proclamation noting the South's celebration of Confederate History Month without mentioning slavery.
This year, the New Republic magazine published a photo of Allen wearing a Confederate flag on his lapel during high school."

IF one of the cops said, "Someone else is going to have to now sign the stimulus bill", that would have been a HUGE problem AND be racist. Instead, you just have confusion as the cartoonist tries and fails badly at making something funny out of something that was hideous and horrible (a poor woman being mauled to near death by a crazed ape that another poor soul was mis-guidedly showing affection for).

No, it's a sh*tty cartoon. As are all his others. There is no humor here no matter how you alter it because of the event...the woman getting mauled, there is no way to make that funny while it's a current event. This is the Post's usual modus operandi. Appeal to the least intelligent among us and be controversial, yeah it sells papers.

I don't think the cartoon was intentionally racist. I think it was stupid to try and link a horrible accident like the chimpanzee attack to the "stimulus" bill, but I don't think it was intentionally racist.
In fact, I wonder if this cartoon is not, instead, a sign of good things rather than bad. I know, that's going to irritate people, but think about it. The cartoonist didn't think there was going to be an outcry about using the chimp in the cartoon (as a matter of race) or he would have written it differently. So, maybe, just maybe, we're starting to get past it a little. But, then again, look at the outcry.
I don't think the guy is really very funny and I think he's off base sometimes, but I'll bet conservative Republicans don't like Mark Fiore either.
It's all about perspective.
Now, let the bashing begin.-

so you're saying that unless the cartoonist was so dumb he wrote Obama's name on the monkey and changed the words of the cop to 'signed' instead of written, it can't possibly be a racist cartoon directed at Obama. Yeah, there are lots of people who don't get it and lots who pretend they don't get it. Amazing, really truly amazing that they pretend to be shocked that the semantic games you people are doing to deny what is damn obvious doesn't work on everybody, But you've also got yourselves convinced the people are down on Obama and down on the stimulus bill so what else can be expected. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer, are we, connies?

Regardless of the cartoonists intent, any lame brain would know the majority of people would take one look at it and see racist. It's a 1 frame cartoon, usually there's plenty of room for interpretation in art work and inspires thought, this tho, is different. Most people think Obama wrote the stimulus, and the buck does stop with Obama, you need to look at the intent of the cartoon and what most will think. Maybe it does seem to be mostly knee jerk reaction, but is a 1 frame cartoon meant to require deep thought? no........cartoons are instant things, and if you've seen the artists other cartoons, you might change your opinion from 'this meant a whole lot more and had nothing to do with racism' to yeah...this guys an ass How could the cartoonist not know there would be an outcry?? seriously, is he that stupid?. If he really isn't a racist, then he's a serious dumbass.

With a little help you may get this. It's a "caricature" of the people who wrote the stimulus package. Who wrote the stimulus package? C'mon, you can do it. Who wrote the stimulus package. C'mon, almost there. Yes congress. Congress wrote the stimulus package. And then they did what? C'mon, think, yes the Senate and Congress made some changes together and now, for better or worse, we have a stimulus package. yeeeaaahhhhh, knew you could do it.
Now lets think about this. Most people don't like the stimulus package, not happy with it at all. Cops shoot a weirdo's chimp.Cartoonist put's the peoples unhappiness with Congresses stimulus package and depicts it as a chimp that the Po' Po' shoot in Connecticut.
What is so hard about that? Really? -

There is no mention whatsoever of Obama or the Presidency for that matter. It just emphasizes how stupid, out-of-touch and mundane this Congress has become.

The cartoon by itself wouldn't be racist.
The caption with a different picture that is not historically a racist analogy wouldn't have been racist.
But putting that caption with a picture that brings forth the most base racist analogy, comparing black men to monkeys, makes it nothing but.
The thing is, there is nothing even humorous about this cartoon. The NY Post defended it as "humor" but who, except for the racists, are laughing? No one that I can tell. Besides, what connection was there between that chimp going crazy and Obama's stimulus package? What does that cartoon with that caption even mean, if not to compare our President with an "out of control monkey"????
I mean...be real. -

It'd be fine if someone made fun of Obama. In fact I'd welcome it because it seems hard to do and very few comedians seem to be able to do it.
What's not fine is to imply that he's been shot dead, or is a monkey. As that steps into a big ass pile of racism and could even be construed as a threat against the president. -

There are certain lines that shouldn't be crossed and sometimes we don't know where that line is until we HAVE crossed it.
This cartoon is certainly in bad taste as the one from the Danish cartoonist was. Has anyone bothered to ask the creator what his intention was? What was he thinking when this piece of tripe popped into his little brain? Does anyone know him? Is he a racist? Or, is he just a total jerk-off? I'd be interested in knowing. Most people deny their racism - maybe he does too. -
