Peer was scheduled to play Anna Chakvetadze in the first round.

Kudos to the Tennis Channel for their stand. Dubai could have contributed to tolerance in the Middle East but chose instead to be steadfastly intolerant. Small things like this event could be stepping stones towards understanding and peace in the region if only both sides would take those first small steps.

Sports should be above politics. The US made the same mistake by boycotting the Olympics in 1980 which was followed in 1984 by 30 countries boycotting the olympics in Los Angeles. Nothing was accomplished.

Shahar Peer from Israel should not be held accountable for the attrocities committed by Israel in Gaza and Labanon. Even if an embargo against Israel is put in place by the rest of the world it should have no effect on sports. Sports is one way for people to communicate and perhaps be made aware of whats happening in the world. -

I'm with Justice. There is no way anything is accomplished with boycott via sports, nor does the venue know it's place if it proceeds in this direction.

When it is thought that a sports event could, or worse should, define or shape a political outcome there is not much left but shame on the part of the decision makers for their misdirected self importance - like they are in a position to make a judgement!! -

This has been brewing for years. This is what happens when you put a tennis tournament in a completely intolerant country. As far as I'm concerned the WTA and ATP should cancel the tournaments immediately and never come back. And if the tours don't I would hope the players boycott. This is one of the many reasons that I would never visit a Islamic country.
