Elderly Wrestling Legend Verne Gagne Investigated in Death at Nursing Home - Backporch FanHouse »

Verne was a great competitor and did a great job for the business. I was a professional wrestler for over 10 years and wish my career could have been half as prolific as his. Sorry he has Alzheimer's. What a waste of a great wrestling and story mind.

In January, a 97-year-old man named Helmut Gutmann suffered a fall at the Friendship Village retirement community in Minnesota. Gutmann died 20 days later, and now multiple news outlets are reporting that he fell because his roommate -- Gagne -- threw him to the ground.

I submitted this because it sheds some light and opens a discussion on dementia and Alzheimer's and nursing homes. Most nursing homes have a separate wing where dementia and Alzheimer's patients reside together. As in the this case sometimes some of the patients are violent. This is sad for all involved. It shouldn't be used to make fun of Gagne or anyone who has dementia or Alzheimers or who may have it. Hopefully it will raise awareness. Hopefully people will ask questions of the nursing homes they're looking into whether for themselves or their loved ones. How do they handle, deal with consumers who are have dementia or Alzheimers and sometimes get violent?

Obviously jail time wont work because the person who was violent isn't in their right mind, doesn't know what they're doing, so how could they be held accountable? At the same time the safety of the rest of the residents and the resident who was violent must be addressed.

Hey CM! I remember Verne Gagne years ago as a great champion of the now-defunct AWA. What a shame how this is turning out. Thanx for the look see. He was also an Olympic gold medalist back in the 40's as well.
