Obama’s Pentagon review: Gitmo meets the standards of the Geneva Conventions »

When does the military’s compliance with international law qualify as bad news? When you’re a new president desperate for excuses to follow through on a dopey campaign promise that’ll please your nutroots base and no one else.

    Obama's Antiterror Progress
He embraces Bush policies on secrecy, rendition.

President Obama has done a masterful job disguising his Administration's growing antiterror maturity, but this week produced further evidence that he is erring on the side of keeping the country safe rather than appeasing the political left. The Justice Department filed to dismiss a federal appeals case involving rendition, embracing an argument developed by . . . the Bush Administration.

wonder where this leaves the nut roots who are screaming for an investigation of Bush's DOJ

"Walsh concluded that … force-feeding, which involves strapping prisoners to feeding chairs and forcing tubes down one nostril and into their stomachs, is in compliance the Geneva Convention’s mandate that the lives of prisoners must be preserved, the government official said."

I do wish I had the wisdom to suggest the proper course of action, but I don't. I can't condone the above practice, either. If they prefer to die from a hunger strike, let them.

Seems the ACLU doesn't want them in the Colorado supermax prison anyway

ACLU of Colorado executive director Cathryn Hazouri says the conditions at Supermax won’t be an improvement for terror suspects. Noting that several Gitmo detainees have been released after the Bush administration admitted it couldn’t prove guilt, Hazouri questions whether a move to the tiny cells at Supermax, where most inmates are kept in solitary confinement 23 hours a day, is fair treatment for suspects awaiting trial.

Maybe Cathryn Hazouri can take a few of them home with her

Wow, Just a month into a 48 month stint and already obama and crew are backpeddling. Well, it just goes to show you, the more things "change", the more they stay the same.

Obama really isn't going to be any better or any worse than Bush. He just had the luxury of claiming that he would be different.

Okay folks.... this is not even a news article. It's a conservative blog.

Do you trust "one person at the Pentagon to say that people working for the Pentagon under Rumsfeild were treating people humanely?"

What an utter bunch of whitewash, hogwash, or whatever you call it.

Sensory deprivation is not treating people humanely- ask any medical doctor.

You cons are really stretching it aren't you?

Obama wants to CLOSE GITMO and the report was part of the review process.

The article does NOT say that Obama wants to keep Gitmo open and needs a justification to do so.

The article does not say that Obama ordered a coverup.

Since the review was part of the process of closing Gitmo, the clear implication was that Gitmo would be closed regardless of the outcome of the report. The unspoken implication is that the review would be part of the decision on further steps down the line. What would that be - disciplining, court martial, demotion, jail, discharge???

It REALLY smells like Adm Patrick Walsh was simply covering up the collective asses of the military involvement in Gitmo in order to avoid future disciplinary action.

So all you cons wagging your fingers and spewing your hypocritical righteoous anger should direct it at the military who tortured prisoners under the orders of Bush. Now the military is (are?) sh*tt*ng bricks with worry and trying to weasel their way out of legal repercussions.

I repeat. BUSH ORDERED THE TORTURE.

                OBAMA IS CLOSING GITMO.

Um, doesn't the Pentagon RUN Gitmo? Isn't that like asking Nike for a report on the conditions in its sweatshops? Isn't that like asking News Corp. for a report on the accuracy of Fox's reportage?

The issue of past torture in Gitmo remains unresolved. Keep in mind, this report says that Gitmo 'complies' with the GC, not 'has always complied with' the GC. Even the Red Cross has stated that conditions have improved, but that is not really a vindication of possible past practices.

The issue of denial of habeas corpus remains.

It wasn't until July 7, 2006 that the Pentagon agreed henceforth the detainees would receive protections under GC Common Article 3. Up to that point, the base was operated under the executive guidance that the detainees were not entitled to any GC protection whatsoever. In 2002, trainers were dispatched to Gitmo and based their interrogation classes on a 1957 study of Chinese interrogation techniques designed to illicit false confessions.

The story of past treatment and the use of 'enhanced interrogation' is far from over. I hope Obama continues on course to close the facility and determine the long-range status of these detainees.

They should have been shot on the field of battle. All you snivelling cowards don't know anything about the rules of engagement in war. These people are not soldiers or, Even freedom fighters, their simply killers. When things slow down in the war they will bomb a school,or a market place.Death, and destruction is what drives them.I don't give a big rats a$$ one way or another. The place is ten times better than what they lived in before.I would like to see Alcatraz reopened as is,I also think there should be no guards.I also think that each man should have at least a side arm,and a full ammo belt. All supplies should be air droped.Ill bet you they will kill each other, they need the body count. You know, paradise, virgins and such.
