Obama campaigned for president last year with climate change and energy issues atop his agenda. And he returned to those themes yesterday, saying that a cap-and-trade bill would help spark economic recovery by giving U.S. companies greater incentive to start producing more wind turbines, solar panels, biofuels and battery-powered automobiles.
"To truly transform our economy, to protect our security, and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy," Obama said in his address to Congress. "So I ask this Congress to send me legislation that places a market-based cap on carbon pollution and drives the production of more renewable energy in America. That's what we need."-

Since this story has almost run its course I have to say that if one examines the puerile and half-hearted "efforts" on this thread by the nattering nabobs of nihilism who espouse a contrarian doctrine one would have to conclude that Obama has it made.

unfortunately it seems more likely that our propellerite doubters and deniers were all just having a bad hair day - or perhaps believed this post to be such utter nonsense that it didn't deign a second of their time which could be so much better spent on stoking other furnaces of opposition.
My thanks of course go out ESPECIALLY to those of that ilk who did provide some talking points - and as always its a pleasure to say goodbye to a story at the top of the front page.

Its a no-brainer in my opinion. REGARDLESS of opinions regarding global warming it clearly has the potential to elaborate a portfolio of exciting new - and some not-so-new but underused technologies which will be of immense value and versatilty. I'm a great enthusiast of the different strokes for different folks philosophy. If the US develops a host of options for a brave new world, the patents alone will be as valuable as finding as much oil as has been used in human history and potentially much more..

I agree that we are going to have to find new alternatives...even if we haven't hit peak oil yet it is going to come eventually.

The resultant chaos from not having new sources ready to go at that time is something I don't even like to contemplate much less want to have to live through.
Factor in the environment and the necessity of preserving it and I don't see how a thinking person could deny the need for new energy sources.
It's a choice between a little hard work today and retaining a viable future for humanity or continuing along the path we are and ending up fighting a forever war across the face of a dead planet. -

Obama also appealed to lawmakers by acknowledging the difficulties associated with voting on a climate plan that is sure to carry a large price tag. "None of this will come without cost, nor will it be easy," the president said. "But this is America. We don't do what's easy. We do what's necessary to move this country forward."

There is alot of money spent on other things that in my opinion are not as important to our country as this.-

Obama has big ideas for big changes to big systems--preventing and preparing for climate change, creating sustainable energy sources and production, reforming healthcare and the like. These are badly needed long-term projects that could still help the economy in the short term by creating entirely new industries. They carry big price tags, but also the potential for big payoffs.

Unfortunately, Congresspeople are afraid of big spending--they're happy to tack on small items to unrelated bills to benefit their districts, which often do nothing for overall problems and eventually add up to huge expenditures. I wish there were some way to slap some sense into these people.

Hmmmmmm no pork in my bills, I will not allow lobbyists in my administration, I will not use fear tactics and I will have the most ethical administration in history (don't bother me with the silliness about those in my cabinet that don't pay taxes).

I won't try to pretend that I am in the slightest but impressed by the arguments put forward by the "warming deniers" but regardless of that there are very potent and clear reasons for exploring technologies which are far more reliable and guaranteeably sustainable.

Remember gas at 29.9 cents a gallon? Of course at that price everybody can guzzle like crazy, drive 30 foot long vee-hi-cls with tail fins like giant sharks. Just the simple fact that that would seem completely absurd to 95% of people today is the reality that we need to start from. How many of the people who are on the global warming denial path wpuld have predicted the death of Detroit, homes that aren't worth the outstanding mortgages that people just walk away from?
My young daughter recently inherited a fine apartment right across from the Flatiron Building in NYC and tells me of businesses closing in the neighbourhood on a daily basis.
Her latest very brief email spoke of "the whole world crashing around me".
Fortunately, as a multinational person, she has plenty of other options, but for the moment she needs to be there.
Regarding energy and global warming - whether you BELIEVE in it or nor - BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY should absolutely be the order of the day.
If you want to bet against it then find a bookie - hey - I'll even find you one! That way at least you'll also have an incentive to keep it nice and cool..-

Fiftynine is right. You nay-sayers about Obama refuse to see the forest for the trees.

Bush brought great harm to this country. Whether he is your boy or not is beside the point. He was bad for this country.
Your fear mongering about Obama is a repeat of your hero's thinking - ignore the reality and suppose about the unknown future. What you are doing is supporting the sins of your man by saying that it is factual that Obama might be worse.
My question is - how does that make Bush better? And at the same time what proof is there that Obama's plan will be worse?
By your reasoning we should keep the Bush philosophy. That is pure unadulterated stupidity. -

So the government is going to force companies to cut production even further in hopes desperation becomes the mother of invention. Great. Read this before jumping on the "government coercion solves everything" bandwagon:

Just ANOTHER excuse for raising taxes. This whole 'global warming'/'climate change', whatever name they can come up with, is just another reason to take money from hard working Americans, just so the government can keep their thumb on us. Climate change is a joke, and Gore is laughing ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. OH!! Is HE going to spread HIS wealth? NOT LIKELY!!

Does ANYONE know their science? Don't they know that we breathe out carbon so the plants can live, and in turn the plants give off oxygen? The ocean gives off the biggest majority of CO2. If they cap co2 don't they know the plants will die,and they will have to make us wear masks so we don't breathe 'pollution'. BOOBS!!!!!!!!!!

If you would stop and think, the Republicans did NOT have ANY say in this porkucrap bill. NOT ONE Republican voted for this in congress. I won't even count the three turncoats. They'll get theirs in the next elections.
