FTA - "A complete documentation of Nihilist phenomena is out of the question; but an examination of the unique Nihilist mentality that underlies them, and of its indisputable effects and its role in contemporary history, is surely possible.

We shall attempt here, first, to describe this mentality-in several, at least, of its most important manifestations-and offer a sketch of its historical development; and then to probe more deeply into its meaning and historical program. But before this can be done, we must know more clearly of what we are speaking; we must begin, therefore, with a definition of Nihilism.
This task need not detain us long; Nihilism has been defined, and quite succinctly, by the fount of philosophical Nihilism, Nietzsche.
"That there is no truth; that there is no absolute state of affairs-no 'thing-in-itself.' ... This alone is Nihilism, and of the most extreme kind." -

Even belief in an ultimate truth does not guarantee that an idividual's perception will understand that truth the same way as any other individual. Therefore, everything is a paradox and at the same time clear. If I say, "I think, therefore I am" must I also examine why I think and why I am?

I was talking with an atheist today. He tried to say that life isn't an accident, but, the product of "causation". I asked him to define what he thought "causation" was. So far, he hasn't responded. I don't know about you, but, IF there were no God, seems like Nihilism would be the logical view of life.

"Nihilism seeks the physical destruction of it's enemies."

I don't see that; I equate nihilism as Nothing-ism - everything is really nothing.
All effort, all knowledge, all emotions, whether hate or love.
Those with strong beliefs are always tempted to call those who oppose them 'nihilists'.
But nihilists do not war.
They express themselves, but not as missionaries.
By my definition, Nietzsche is no nihilist. He believes in
achievement, assigns values to knowledge and action. He opposes Christian values with his own, modeled on the Greek idea of 'arete' - excellence.
A true nihilist wouldn't bother.-

I think I can see your point...it' s like judging Christianity by judging the actions of those who claim it.

Calling yourself a Nihilist doesn't necessarily make it so?
An argument could be made that many people have excused dark deeds by claiming all sorts of things they don't really believe in.
The list of belief systems unstained by the self-association of bloodletters would be short indeed.
I am going to have to think that through a bit...Thanks for the thought.

I think there is a temptation for most religious

people to say, 'If my truths are not The Truth, then everything is pointless; eat, drink and be merry for what you believe only adds up to nihilism'.
Which is my Nietzche is the theologian's favorite atheist. -
