Wolfie, in your headline, shouldn't there be some form of puctuation between the words "Panel" and "Raise"? Maybe a colon (:) ? Doesn't make sense like that.

Also -- as your favorite female likes to say -- the fourth graf of the story clearly states that Obama is *against* the idea of a gas tax. Think no one will read the story? Also.

Oh but there must, there has to be a huge mistake Wolfie? He said he'd only tax the people making 250 thousand only the rich? I thought middle class and poor drove cars too, or will we be reduced to the city transit systems?

$13.00 a week wouldn't by a happy meal at Micky Dees for lunch.
What people aren't thinking about is when the Bush tax cuts expire your taxes will go up, so Obama is increasing everyone's taxes will go up because the Bush tax cuts changed all the tax rates! -

"Not only would they know how many miles we drive, but where we go."

Sorry. I'm a proponent of privacy issues and looked into this. It doesn't keep track of where you go other than saying you're in the limits of the state or out of the limits of the state. It's a receive-only box.
But hey -- keep spreading the fear. It's what you do best.

"Its report Thursday warns that if government fails to find a new way to raise money, "we will suffer grim consequences in the future: unimaginable levels of congestion, reduced safety, costlier goods and services, an eroded quality of life, and diminished economic competitiveness as a nation."
Excuse me but wouldn't it work if the government stops spending? Of course, these new taxes won't erode our quality of life or diminish our economic competitiveness. Does anyone really believe that? Did we elect a government to do these things? -

This is going to happen
Think about it:
Washington mandates an increase in CAFE standards
Washington wants the car companies to build more hybrid and all electric vehicles
What is the end result - gas tax revenues fall
It is those very revenues which fund the Highway Trust Fund
Then look at the 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure from the American Society of Civil Engineers:
Since the last Report Card in 2005, the grades have not improved. ASCE estimates the nation still stands at a D average. Deteriorating conditions and inflation have added hundreds of billions to the total cost of repairs and needed upgrades. ASCE's current estimate is $2.2 trillion, up from $1.6 trillion in 2005.
http://www.asce.org/reportcard/2009/
$2.2 Trillion!
And what did Congress manage to put in the stimulus bill for roads and bridges: ~$60 billion - a drop in the bucket
That is why many people wanted more spending for roads and bridges in that bill
They need to get the money from somewhere and with declining gasoline sales what are they going to do??
Watch for a mandate buried in some bill that will require auto makers to place technology in all new cars which will track mileage
The carbon cap and trade or a carbon tax will be in addition to this
They want all coal and natural gas plants closed. Home heating oil too expensive to use
They want all manufacturing with uses carbon based fuels gone
The easiest way to do this is tax carbon -

For those working in manufacturing, the cap and trade will make it so expensive for your company to do business, they will move to India or China where they have no such thing. When the last of the Manufacturing jobs leave here, these same liberals will blame it on greedy capitalists instead of the greedy taxing leftists that come up with the solution to add taxation into a down economy as a way forward, while spending what to date is the average of 30 billion dollars a day.

in essence.. if you're charging by the gallon aren't you charging by the MILE also... and giving people a break for driving fuel efficient or electric cars a break..
Reply
It's not the tax so much that would upset me... not that that wouldn't..
but installing a GPS on my car to track it.. is a HUGE INVASION....
who will have access to that data.. will they allow it to be subpoenaed into court...
use it to catch people committing crimes..
use to PREVENT crimes.. such as HEY HE'S NOT WHERE HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE...
f... that..-

Sorry. It's receive-only. They don't know where you've been. It doesn't store where you've been other than to total up the time spend 'inside' the state or 'outside' the state.

Crazy way to make money. Should charge more taxes for every person who crosses our borders like 10.00 each way. They drive back and forth too. How about those who fly in from other countries??? How about boats that sail in and out regularly? Add taxes to all tobacco products, illegal drugs, higher ticket prices when you speed like $100.00 each mile over the limit? If you don’t get at least 25 mph...lots of taxes. Obscene vehicles that don’t save on fuel need to pay for the privledge.

Like the obscene "older" vehicles that the poor and the middle class that can't afford a new vehicle, like mine? Are those included in your definition of Obscene? You do realize that everyone puts fuel in their vehicles and drives cars, with the exception of the few. Remember how fun it was paying 4 dollars a gallon last summer and these same people were decrying the oil companies for making a profit?

president's statement on the subject is:
"It is not and will not be the policy of the Obama administration,"
and then this happens:
With the administration's position seemingly clear, a special commission created by Congress is nonetheless endorsing those two ideas.
and now you are railing against the statement:
"It is not and will not be the policy of the Obama administration,"
wtf do you want?-

I was talking about the vehicles that the car companies build that don't do anything to help our case for using less gas/fuel.
No I did not like 4 bucks a gallon, but I only drive 12 miles a day every other day or so.

I don't know if this is really relevant to the story but I wonder how much of the repairs needed to roads are not cause by the ever increasing size of transport trucks, as the country looses rail service more and more freight must be moved on the roads and up here they are pounding them to pieces. I still figure that you down there are getting off easy when it comes to what you pay for fuel but then again you do not have as many government programs as we have in Canada or as are in Europe. I think that your government will be taxing fuel more in the future since it is something that most use but I'm like Wolfie, it just doesn't seem fair for those of us who don't live in urban areas. The idea of taxing one on the amount of miles driven is another dumb idea.
Reply
Here's an idea that can make the urban crowd mad why don't we put a tax on all them cars that drive around the city with just one person in them. Up here they tried to make farmers keep a log book to record the miles that we used our trucks for so that we could not claim all of the fuel as an expense or get taxes back on it, people really raise a fuss and the rules changed.
All I can say is good luck in fighting any new taxes on fuel, I think your new government looks at it as a gold mine. -

For those of you who don't have inspections, they can just make you go to a dealler and have odometer read and checked for tampering. PA is already gathering that data as part of our EPA reguired emissions check. Next step is sending a bill for usage, there isn't a scam they won't try to get more money to spend.

Many urban areas require an emissions check or "smog" check on a periodic basis, usually as part of the vehicle registration renewal process. So far, I don't recall any mileage reporting.
Reply
I grew up in Pennsylvania and remember when the vehicle inspection was for safety purposes and, if I recall correctly, was required twice annually, the color of the window sticker changing so the State Troopers could tell when you were up to date. It is very disappointing to me that PA is reporting mileage now as part of their inspection routine. It is another example of an idea with good intentions being subverted to government intrusion and control.

That $13 per week is not a tax break nor reduction; it doesn't have any change in the tax rate tables. It is part of the Pork-u-lus Bill of 2009, Part One. It is borrowed money , of which you WILL pay taxes on top of the other revenue enhancement measures our President Numbnuts will inflict on you and I. Don't be fooled. BTW, Bush's tax reductions are history-gone, AUTOMATIC tax increases. Welcome to equality in Obama's Socialist Utopia, you back-stabbing yuppie scum. Thanks for the change, now we must vote the jerks out of office in 500 days before they do any more damage.
