Porn in the USA: Conservatives are Biggest Consumers »
Posted By idyll 9 months, 1 week ago in Political NewsAmericans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.
A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.
However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.
The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. And again, eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election--Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.
Churchgoers bought less online porn on Sundays--a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. Not to worry, though: expenditures on other days of the week brought churchgoers in line with the rest of the country.

Oh please -- another taxpayper-funded "research" perhaps??

Liberals will sink to anything. It's always funny to me how the supposed "tolerant" party is the most intolerant.
Did you all know that it was the Democrats who put the Japanese in internment camps during WW2?
Do some research on the Democratic party -- they suck. Way worse than the Republicans.-

OMG, this is hilarious, but not surprising. It really brings to mind David Vitter having his fantasy sex with the hooker while dressed in a diaper and sucking on a baby bottle.

And, by the way: to Lojeffkenney
Only you Republicans could be so "intolerant" that God forbid, a president had a BJ and had to be prosecuted because he refused to admit it. And Larry Craig still insists he's got a "wide stance". Mark Foley was protected in his job for years while stalking young boys on the internet for sex.
And you should research your own party, by the way, especially the past 8 years, then do some more research on the Bush Crime family, and his ancestry and connections to the Nazi's.
Hey buddy, you guys can dish it out, but you can't take it. By the way, I bet you still don't even believe that the "red" states are the largest welfare states in the U.S. LOL - where do you live? In the State of Denial????

Okay. Utah is the biggest consumer of porn. And from THIS itty bitty piece of info, we can extrapolate that conservatives are bigger users of porn than liberals???? And, I might add, this info was garnered from anonymous credit card receipts which I doubt mention who the particular user voted for in the '08 election. Is it just me, or are the flaws in the line of logic really that glaring?

Another poster said something to the effect that libs will stoop to anything. I agree somewhat, but even more, I would say that if "researchers" draw these conclusions from such spotty info, then the researchers went into their study with pre-conceived notions and then went about "proving" them.-

Ever done research? Didn't think so. You look at who uses porn, then look at how red the state is. If it correlates, maybe there' s something there.

So the states may have been a Mccain state but where if any where in this article can it show or prove that the people that get porn were the ones that actually voted for who? It doesn't say 100% of the people get porn only a small percent. Well that small percent might have just been the small percent that voted for Obama in those states. Get real people these polls are a waste of each and every one of our tax dollars, and with so many peole out of work this is all they can come up with. Get real...

You know Bush had an MBA and look how he messed up the country.
Um, does that mean you have had twenty marriages that lasted two years? Or that you swap or have multiple wives? Or what? Yeah, I know, Utah IS different. Been there.
Lots of cultists up there. Majorly warped.
So, wear your arm in a sling holding up your 4 carat bauble? Must hurt being so snooty. -

This is the most ridiculous unsubstantiated slander I have ever heard. I suspect the heavy porn useage in conservative states is by frustrated liberals who struggle living in places where people actually have a sense of right and wrong and force them to live within some boundaries.

I'm getting really disgusted with the inference that somehow religious conservatives are stupid. My husband is a physician, I am an MBA and my kids are both National Merit scholars. And we are conservatives. And guess what. We aren't into porn. We have a twenty two year monogamous and sexually satisfying marriage.
Liberals are such losers. And they are throwing this country into the tank. Since they are miserable failures, everyone else has to fail, too. -

The liberal media lives in Spin City! And those of you who think that reseseach is "pure math" you are HIGH! Resesearch is VERY subjective and not always, but the facts can be easily manipultated.
Let's take a moment to listen to the truth in Andrew Lang's quote - "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lampposts—for support rather than for illumination. "

This is either purposely misleading or written with absolute ignorance. First off your attempts to slander conservatives and churchgoers is very obvious, secondly look at what you are saying conservatives BUY more porn. I may only be a high-school senior, but I believe I can deduct more about that fact than the author of this story. (Also just a quick fact Montana is conservative seems contradictory for such a broad claim doesn't it.) There is ********* out there meaning you don't have to BUY it. By the tone of your article you make it seem as if conservatives are sick minded sex animals that watch more porn than anyone else, but in fact you can't even come close to deducting such a ludicrous fact. Where are the statistics for *********? Does your article even mention the possibilities for a second view such as the one above? If you are going to make such allegations than perhaps I should make a few of my own. Liberals don't pay for their porn. Liberals don't go to church considering you seem to group all church goers as conservatives. Liberals are all grossly offended by porn. Think before you attempt to slander on such ridiculous terms.

I happen to live in Utah, and I happen to buy porn. Does that make me bad? I have a wonderful marriage and two great kids. My husband and I like 'spice'. You can't buy it here, so we are forced to get it elsewhere, all because the "church" runs the state which is WRONG! I'm not saying anything about policatical parties or religions. Maybe it should be up to the individuals and their freedom to buy it or not?????

In your comment above: it's 'deduce', not 'deduct'. Deduct means to subtract. Deduce means to narrow down, find a common denominator.

It makes sense to me that the neo-CONS are the biggest users of porn. They're all a bunch of boring, hypocritical losers who are unattrative to members of the opposite (and same) sex. Their only sexual outlet is self gratification through porn.

I happen to KNOW for a fact, first-hand that back in the day--when I was an erotic massage (happy endings) girl that 90% of my "clientele" were prominent church going conservatives, married, with kids and always asking for "more". They were the BIGGEST bunch of hippocites I'd ever known. And big spenders.

Well, I'm a legitimate massage therapist, the kind that went to school and DOES NOT give happy endings, and I will say that the only times I've been asked to give one it was to an older conservative, REPRESSED HYPOCRITE.....this does NOT surprise me at all....with repression comes perversion, if it's taboo, it's coveted.

This is another group twisting facts to sensationalize a story. If you read it correctly it didn't say the number of purchases per person but the number of purchases per broadband connection. Most of the conservative states are rural in nature and would have a lower number of Broadband connections and thus would make the people who live in the urban areas of the red states, who are way more liberal than the rest of the state, take on a higher percentage of the connections. In short if you look at the number of purchases per person then it is the more liberal states who buy the most, but that wouldn't get you published so they twist the facts. Numbers don't lie people do!!!

Yours was actually an interesting point, though emotionally stated. I actually didn't pick up on that point when I read the article the first time. I would go further, however, and say that how valid the assumptions drawn from the data are would also be dependent on whether the researchers had access to the broadband users' political affiliation in each state, which we don't know. While it is likely there are a higher percentage of people considered "liberal" in urban vs. rural areas, that still does not mean that they are necessarily registered democrats or the ones purchasing the larger percentage of porn. That is an assumption by you just as invalid as what you are accusing the researchers or writers of. We need more information to draw accurate conclusions.

This article is a perfect example of what is wrong with America. A big headline not supported by any real facts. It is a sad day when you realize that most Americans fit into the class of people that make Jay Lino's street people. They can't even name the most obvious of important facts. The study must assume that equal number of American's even have a credit card to pay for porn. Wonder how the real demographics would play out if you look at percentage of credit card holders. Nothing on the education level, job level of the subscribers. Doesn't surprise me that more states that supported Obama has least amount of porn. It probably points to states with more welfare and gov't beneficiaries that don't have the credit cards to buy the porn that don't have credit, and make up the credit downfall of the country. After all, if you take the number of people that have a real job, real business, those are not the people that support the socialist, liberal policies of the current administration or even the porn the article suggests is being digested by 'conservatives'.

Im a conservative and ive paid for online porn...usually not worth it for the amount paid.

But I gotta agree with several of the posts here...liberal states are often composed of a LOT of minority voters especially in obama's case. It would seem to me that when a person (specifically mexicans) can find enough sexual partners to have 20+ kids, why would they need porn?

Like when Lambaugh referred to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead as "just another drug addict" that died. Meanwhile Rush is addicted to drugs. And Spitzer who was "tough on prostitution" was the king of prostitutes. And that evangelist preacher, Ted Haggert. He was Bush's consultant and the biggest cheerleader on family values and anti-gay legislation.
