There is a great reason to extend broadband to every nook and cranny of the country: telecommuting.

If more people worked from home it would reduce business overhead, pollution, traffic, accidents, commute times and most importantly dependence on foreign oil. Not only that, but people could move to affordable areas instead of living on top of each other like tenement cockroaches and driving up real estate prices to live near the office.
Studies show 40% of Americans could work from home. What is required is that companies create new metrics of work performance (vs. the industrial age butt-in-seat wage).
Then we could reduce our gasoline consumption by 40% overnight, with existing technology.
