Obama shelves Bush-era ENDANGERED SPECIES rule »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 8 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsWASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Tuesday shelved a Bush-era rule that critics say weakened protections for animals and plants protected by the Endangered Species Act.
"We should be looking for ways to improve it, not weaken it," Obama said of the Endangered Species Act. He spoke at an Interior Department ceremony to mark its 160 years.
In December, the Bush administration finalized regulations that allow agencies to decide for themselves whether highways, dams, mines and other construction projects might harm animals and plants listed under the Endangered Species Act.

FTA: "Obama signed a presidential memorandum to put on hold the regulation until the Interior and Commerce departments complete a review of it.

At least for now, the two agencies will resume full scientific reviews of projects that might harm endangered wildlife and plants.
A conservation group that had sued to overturn the Bush-era rule welcomed the news.
"Obama has swiftly delivered on his campaign promise to reverse Bush’s anti-endangered species regulations," Kieran Suckling, director of the Center for Biological Diversity, told msnbc.com. "He has restored independent, scientific oversight to the heart of the Endangered Species Act."
Congressional action
Democrats in Congress are attempting to reverse the rule via legislation. House Democrats wrote a provision into a spending bill that passed last month, leading Republicans to cry foul.""
This is such a HAPPY DAY!!!! -

This is such a wonderful thing since I was able to work on the reintroduction project in the late 1980 and 90's. Now we are seeing the results with more Eagles and today President Obama made sure this will be there for future generations.-

I remember that day when you learned what former President Bush had said and made his decision about, the Endangered Soecies. You were very upset that day.

Regarding Eagle Sightings
Reply
When the project was started way back then, Eagles would not nest any where near humans or human structures. Now, over 3 decades later, it seems that the Eagles are becoming a bit more tolerant of humans and nesting more closer to populated areas. But still, they do insist on privacy and the report is right about all the human activity near the nest could deter them from coming back to that nest site.
(I know hubby and I just hate it when the spot us and gawk at us but we know we are magnificent creatures and most humans appreciate a good sighting ;>-

My son has a secluded home on a small cliff over the Puget Sound. There's a very tall snag on his property, seen only from the back where a female nested three yars ago, and where from his third floor balcony we could watch as she fed and tended him. I got to watch as her 'baby' took his first flight, and my son got to watch him catch his first fish. He called me laughing, saying the 'baby' was barely able to get the large fish out of the water. Something about her 'allowing' our presense on the balcony and trusting we wouldn't harm them changes you. Guess I can't express it any more than that.

Five years ago when I lived in Colorado, I was starting to see bald eagles all the time, especially in the city area. It freaked me out the first time I was bicycling on a path way and saw a bald eagle take flight out of a tree that was just a few feet away from me, and right above me. I almost fell off my bike. It was the first bald eagle I saw that close in the wild, though golden eagles are very common in Colorado too.

You would think I would know better but for some reason I am just amazed that you have to make a negative remark regarding this decision. Now, no one will be SUING because the law will be followed. You only sue if they are not following the law and protecting the Endangered Species.

Where have you nut jobs been. Not reading about any building that goes on in areas not built on before.
First the preliminary plans are drawn.
Studies are made including environmental impact.
Hearings are held.
Detail plans are made.
Permits are gathered.
Lawsuits are fought.
Finally the project is built if it gets past all of the above.
This happens if it is government or private. Where have you people been hiding. Bush was trying to limit the lawsuits. But Obama being a lawyer likes lawsuits because his profession makes a bundle doing them.

I had a terrible time getting into this thread! Is anyone else having problems with Prop locking up and running slow?
Now, i wonder what the cons will have to say about this. No longer allowing big business to run rampant over the land and animals, polluting and killing. This is excellent news!-

You all do realize that if some animal that is protected on your lawn the can stop you from using your own property.Other states will be like California and will run jobs and business to other places because of all the red tape to build a factory on a piece of property because a mouse lives there. I hope you know all the big money problems this will cause.

So Obama, when you go to build your promised WIND GENERATOR power plants, you may get shut down, because of the little plants and earth worms that building them would disturb. Not to mention, a retarded bird might fly into the propellers and die!

You are saying that nothing has been blocked or forced to move to less acceptable place because of these things. Where have you been hiding. Tree hugger lawsuits are the bane of any larger project and many smaller ones. Many have been killed. EVERY OIL WELLED THAT HAS BEEN DRILLED HAS FACED THESE LAWSUITS. ALMOST ALL LARGE PROJECT HAS HAD THEM. Tree huggers make lawsuits a part of planning the cost of building.

I worked for the 3rd largest water utility in the U.S. as a survey crew chief for many years and know that endangered species can shut down a project. However, many projects still went ahead that didn't interfere with endangered species. My point being, that those of you that think we can't work around this issue are mistaken. Many projects have already done impact studies on both endangered species and indigenous habitat before they get approval.
Personally, I would rather see a project shutdown to save the planet, as we only have one, than to continue the pattern of irresponsible stewardship we've displayed which has caused an endangered species list to even exist.-

Well said, you would think that every human being on this planet would want to put the planet first because it's "Web Of Life" interconnects all living breathing creatures. With out this web our planet would collapse and we would eventually cease to exist.

How do a lot of you expect our country to survive when we have some of the cleanest manufacturing plants in the word, but there not clean enough. We have all of these laws and stipulations that other countries do not such as Mexico, China, or anty other up and coming third world. Our jobs leave here and go to them. They have no respect for Mother Nature. Why can't we use some common sense and find a better balance with ourselves. We can still care for the environment, but why do we need to fix the rest of the word in the process with no help from the rest of the world.

If we do not lead the way with environmental protections. Even after the Bush years, other countries do still, to a much lesser extent, look to the United States for leadership.
Reply
That is what's wrong with the whole "china won't lower its greenhouse gas emissions, therefore what's the point in us making changes" Us not making changes allows countries like China, etc to say "the US is not doing it so why should we" It's cyclical.

There will be ,in the very near future, many millions of people, saying, "what the hell did we do,electing a socialist like Obama" He is setting America up for a very painful economic fall,as well as a danger from the islamist terrotists, who were happy to see him elected.

By protecting endangered animals we protect ourselves. Most of these animals that are being exterminated are a warning that we are next if we are not careful. And yes it has to be global, as world leaders we are showing intelligence and foresight to the rest of the world. They will follow because we have a president who uses diplomacy, respect and leadership.

Protect the eagle, protect the turtle but we can kill the unborn without regard. Just tissue right? I'm not trying to say kill the animals, in fact I LOVE eagles. There was one enjoying an updraft and holding position over a lake on my ride to the office today. But why is this more of a priority than seeing that we give kids a chance to at least be born. Eagle eyes or a childs laugh. I guess Obama has made his choices clear.

I have an idea, why don't we all just sit around and watch wildlife thrive while we humans starve to death because we have no jobs due to lack of developement, because it's more important to save animals. Everything will be "paradise" for the animals that are alive and manage not to be eaten by something else, and no one will be around to appreciate it, but at least our consciences would be satisfied, but then we wouldn't be around to have satisfied consciences either

How shortsighted, why can you not comprehend that responsible developement and conservation can work together for the betterment of both. Unregulated developement has desroyed eco systems for to long. We are inter dependent with the environment, it fails we fail. Ther are plenty of abandned sights that could and should be redeveloped.
