An Assault on Authentic Compassion by Peter Wehner and on National Review Online »

Among the claims that modern liberalism likes to make is that, unlike conservatism, it “cares for the poor” and pursues policies that make that sentiment real. This claim, already weak (see liberal opposition to welfare reform and school choice), is about to grow weaker still. We have in mind President Obama’s proposal to limit tax deductions on charitable giving.

With this proposal, President Obama is saying as directly as it can be said that the federal government is better able than private citizens and the charities they support to decide how these donation dollars are best distributed.

Isn't this really great, we now have the government stealing from charities. You say how is it stealing, well when you limit the amount the wealthy can donate you are effectively stealing from the pockets of charitable institutions.

    FTA
"The administration’s recently released budget will limit tax deductions on gifts made to charities by those earning over $250,000 a year, raising (we are told) almost $180 billion over the next ten years. It’s an extraordinary grab for money — money given to private charities by private citizens as private donations. These donations directly fund programs that (among other things) feed, clothe, and house the poor, deliver after-school programs to disadvantaged children, build new facilities for colleges and other schools, and generally enrich everyone’s lives through education and the arts."

Have you ever seen any government funded art that was anything but pathetic?

Obama's Tax Plan Could Cause Giving by the Wealthy to Drop by Several Billion Dollars Annually

President Obama’s tax proposals — including a limit on charitable giving deductions that could be taken by America’s wealthiest people — could cause giving by America’s wealthy to drop by several billion dollars a year, according to estimates released today by the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.
The center looked at how the proposals Mr. Obama released on Thursday would have affected giving based on 2006 data showing how much taxpayers deducted for charitable contributions. It said that if Mr. Obama’s tax plan had been in effect, Americans with incomes of $250,000 or more would have decreased their giving by 4.6 percent or nearly $3.9-billion. People at that income level claimed more than $81-billion in charitable gifts in 2006.

The drop in giving is less stark when looked at in the context of how it would affect all Americans who itemize on their tax forms and claim charitable deductions. Total giving by people who itemize would have dropped just 2.1 percent if the Obama plan had been in effect in 2006, the center estimated. Itemized charitable contributions totaled nearly $187-billion that year.

This will help the Dems make the Government the only source to get help, thus bolstering their power.

We only thought Clinton was slick, but this cuts the cheese.

The government will eventually own everything, one step at a time. Though they say they aren't nationalizing banks, they just happen to own up to 75% interest in them.

The war against capitalism and individualism continues.

This was an interesting point! It´s worth to remember that every Dollar that goes to the government (e.g. via taxes) is mising anywhere else: It can´t be spent on individual consumation and it can´t be part of a donation. So, a balance must be found between the understandable interest of the government to earn more taxes and reduce depts on the one hand and the fact that welfare depends on donations, which shouldn´t be substancially reduced by high taxes!
