An Assault on Authentic Compassion by Peter Wehner and on National Review Online »
Posted By FairNBalanced 8 months, 3 weeks ago in Political NewsAmong the claims that modern liberalism likes to make is that, unlike conservatism, it “cares for the poor” and pursues policies that make that sentiment real. This claim, already weak (see liberal opposition to welfare reform and school choice), is about to grow weaker still. We have in mind President Obama’s proposal to limit tax deductions on charitable giving.

"see liberal opposition to welfare reform and school choice"

Starts off with a lie and continues onward.
"welfare reform" would strike people from welfare and put less money and help into the hands of people who need them. School 'choice' would become segregation in a matter of years. -

Actually you should keep in mind that "charitable organizations" have become a major source of fraud and are widely used as tax dodges. Tax free religious organizations are one of the worst.

Tax Abuse of Charitable Organizations
... Charities are meant to serve the common good. To encourage such entities,
Congress has honored charities, foundations, and other public service entities with
perhaps the greatest benefit that Congress is capable of bestowing: Exemption from the
tax laws. And by far, the greatest number of public charities live up to the high level of
societal responsibility which they exist to fulfill. Public charities facilitate critically
important funding for such things as cancer research, disaster relief, infrastructure
development in third-world countries, and preservation of the arts.
Yet, as moths to the flame, those whose livelihoods consist of torturing the tax
code for the economic benefit of their clients and themselves are drawn to charities not
because of any philanthropic reasons, but solely, only, and exclusively because of the
technical tax exemption for such organizations. This tax exemption is simply too
tempting for the purveyors of tax schemes and shelters to ignore, and so they have
devised and will continue to devise strategies to take advantage of the exemption in ways
both never contemplated by Congress and which provide the associated charities with
relatively nominal benefits, if any benefits at all....

Isn't this really great, we now have the government stealing from charities. You say how is it stealing, well when you limit the amount the wealthy can donate you are effectively stealing from the pockets of charitable institutions.

"The administration’s recently released budget will limit tax deductions on gifts made to charities by those earning over $250,000 a year, raising (we are told) almost $180 billion over the next ten years. It’s an extraordinary grab for money — money given to private charities by private citizens as private donations. These donations directly fund programs that (among other things) feed, clothe, and house the poor, deliver after-school programs to disadvantaged children, build new facilities for colleges and other schools, and generally enrich everyone’s lives through education and the arts." -

Here are just a few of them:
The US, Mexico, Guatemala, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium[even], Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Germany, Greece, Norway, Ireland - and of course works from many other countries in many of those countries - e,g,India, Japan, Tibet, Indonesia, Australia, Morocco, Bulgaria, Russia, Iraq, Iran, too many African countries to list.
Without government sponsorship of the Arts in general the world would be a VERY dull place indeed.
But I suppose in Dullsville no one would notice the difference.

Obama's Tax Plan Could Cause Giving by the Wealthy to Drop by Several Billion Dollars Annually
Reply
President Obama’s tax proposals — including a limit on charitable giving deductions that could be taken by America’s wealthiest people — could cause giving by America’s wealthy to drop by several billion dollars a year, according to estimates released today by the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.
The center looked at how the proposals Mr. Obama released on Thursday would have affected giving based on 2006 data showing how much taxpayers deducted for charitable contributions. It said that if Mr. Obama’s tax plan had been in effect, Americans with incomes of $250,000 or more would have decreased their giving by 4.6 percent or nearly $3.9-billion. People at that income level claimed more than $81-billion in charitable gifts in 2006.
The drop in giving is less stark when looked at in the context of how it would affect all Americans who itemize on their tax forms and claim charitable deductions. Total giving by people who itemize would have dropped just 2.1 percent if the Obama plan had been in effect in 2006, the center estimated. Itemized charitable contributions totaled nearly $187-billion that year.

This will help the Dems make the Government the only source to get help, thus bolstering their power.

We only thought Clinton was slick, but this cuts the cheese.
The government will eventually own everything, one step at a time. Though they say they aren't nationalizing banks, they just happen to own up to 75% interest in them.
The war against capitalism and individualism continues.-

Obama had the opportunity to really be a good President. If he only kept to his promises to work with both sides. But his massive spending is exposing what a far left liberal he really is. Moderate and conservative Democrats in the Senate are starting to choke over the massive spending and tax increases in Obama’s budget plans and have begun plotting to increase their influence over the agenda of a president who is turning out to be much more liberal than they are.
Reply
In the Senate, where it takes 60 votes to end debate, a few reluctant Democrats can cause big problems for Obama,a reverse of the dynamic that last month gave a few ready to bargain Republicans enormous clout in passing a major stimulus package. -

This was an interesting point! It´s worth to remember that every Dollar that goes to the government (e.g. via taxes) is mising anywhere else: It can´t be spent on individual consumation and it can´t be part of a donation. So, a balance must be found between the understandable interest of the government to earn more taxes and reduce depts on the one hand and the fact that welfare depends on donations, which shouldn´t be substancially reduced by high taxes!
