Comments for A Myth Debunked: The Fat-Burning Zone »

Posted By STONERS 9 months ago in Health & Fitness

There's a lot of misinformation out there about exercise and nutrition. As an ongoing feature, I'll ask experts in those fields about their pet fitness peeves--commonly believed myths that are just plain wrong. This week, I asked Cedric Bryant, chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise, for the facts about the so-called fat-burning zone.

Well I've learned that all these little exercise routines they try and get you to do is mostly crap anyways, Trust me I've tried them all. You arent going to get something for nothing. These 15 and 20 minute abs etc. just don't work. If you want it you are going to have to get off the couch and lay down the candy bars..lol!!! All though some exercise is better than none at all but I've learned at the very least a 30 minute or more a day till you build yourself up- you will see results but be patient- it isn't going to happen over night.

A healthy diet and the amount of calorie consumption along with the appropriate exercise on a consistent schedule is really the only sure method of losing weight. There are probably many ways of exercising and dieting that works for some and not others. You just have to find the right combination that works for you. A willingness and determination to follow through is also a necessity. Our society is one that expects instant results and people who don't get weight loss instantly are discouraged and will continually seek the instant cure rather than the long term life style changes that are necessary.

I agree with the article that there are benefits to both low-intensity and high-intensity aerobics. Low-intensity aerobics would be most beneficial to those just starting a routine, that are overweight (as stated in the article), or that have joint problems.

I know that this wasn't in the article, but I believe that anaerobic activity has to play a part in a good balanced workout routine along with a good diet, proper rest, and a few important supplements.

I heard recently that weight training was more effective at burning fat than cardio. Seems the muscles keep burning (using) fat long after a workout. I weight trained for 18 months to build bone (it worked), and while I didn't lose much weight, I did lose fat while my muscles gained weight. Watching calories while not being a couch potato should help anyone who wants to lose fat as well. Going on a strict 'diet' is too time consuming for me.

Good article STONERS. During the first 20 - 30 minutes of exercise, glycogen is the primary fuel source, so you don't burn significant amounts of fat until glycogen stores are depleted. So yes, 30 minutes of aerobic activity will give you cardiovascular benefits, but you will burn very little fat.

Some ppeople with serious medical problems, should be extra carful. Aways ask your doctor first befor you decide to do an exercise, the are onrs to meet your needs, what is good for one person may be harmful to an other.

I struggle with the aerobics. I find most boring as hell.. but I do like to lift weights..

I've found a couple of things that keep my interest and do combine some of both....

                    KETTLEBELLS .. and TRX...

good demonstrations of both on youtube...

try drop set snatches with the kettlebells.. ..shoot for 50 with each side.. 20-20 --- 15-15 --- 10-10 -- 5-5. one side then the other.. shoot for under 5 minutes.. cold down for 2-5 minutes then do it again. by the 3rd set you'll need a bucket..

and as an added benefit to the kettlebell workouts and the TRX workouts. .. they both strengthen the core.. I stopped altogether my twice weekly visits to the chiropractor.. my back hasn't felt this good since I was in my 20's.. and that's a long time ago..

but weight at least in my case is more a matter of diet..

I think the best time to workout is AFTER you eat your carbs. Lower your blood sugar to keep it from doing damage, and, try to not mix your carbs with your cholesterol.

Stoners I have a non gain weight problem. If I eat breakfast, I'll eat all day long. Then I gain. Two weeks of breakfast and My my body takes the shape of a miller beer bottle. If I go without breakfast and eat after noon I'm fine.
