As jurors filed out, Paradiso left the stand and approached the judge from behind "with an unknown cutting instrument," Konecny said.

I don't know how it works in Stockton, but at criminal court in Chicago, you go through similar security screening as at the airport. (And for any smartasses out there, I know that from experience reporting for jury duty, not from appearing at a trial.)

His family even warned the court officials that he appeared to have a weapon, but nothing was done to disarm him prior to the attack. It sounds like it was a total breakdown in security surrounding this case. When the "bad" guy's family is warning that he's armed and dangerous, it seems to me that at least SOMEONE should take notice...don't you think?

Yes, I'd think so. When I served on the jury here in the aforementioned rape trial, we were on the 3rd floor of the Cook County Courthouse, where they try violent crimes. On the 3rd floor, they have all courtrooms enclosed inside 6-inch-thick bulletproof glass--only the gallery is outside of the glass. It was like judging a trial in a fishbowl.

But it wasn't that safe. Jurors were required to wear 4" x 2" bright red badges that said "JUROR" in block letters at all times within the courthouse after passing security. While a bailiff escorted us to and from lunch, you were on your own in the bathroom or in the hallways, where all kinds of shady characters hung out. And there was no escort walking to the parking garage outside the courthouse (or worse, to public transportation four blocks away) after each day's proceedngs were over.
