From the article:
In the lawsuit, Cook County has asked for $100,000 in compensation for the man-hours spent by the county for investigation of, well, call girl (and guy) services on the site.
While you're correct that prostitution is illegal, spending $100,000 in Cook County to go after Craigslist is just plain stupid. Cook County has almost 6 million people. I'm absolutely certain the sheriff could find a better way to spend $100,000 in order to "serve and protect" those people.
Gee...I wonder if this headline-grabbing case could have anything to with the fact that Dart will be up for re-election within a year?(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 4) (recursion depth : 3) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

"US law protects Craigslist and other websites from being responsible for content posted by users, the website's lawyers argue."

Take it up with Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist, and his lawyers. I imagine they've done their research on the matter.
While I'm sure there is no law specifically stating it, I'm sure they'll be able to cite legal precedents for you.(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 8) (recursion depth : 7) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

No, Progressive gave a link to and article quoting Jim Buckmaster, which included the quote in earthlingerer's comment to which you object. I see nothing on this thread Progressive actually wrote except "Here's the response from Craigslist:".
You can see the full response from Craigslist, which includes the quote and more detail, here:
http://blog.craigslist.org/2009/03/cl-ceo-mystifie...
You, however, are "full of crap," as I strongly doubt you're as familiar with cases in which websites have been held not to be responsible for user-posted content as Craigslist's lawyers.
Craigslist has been involved in similar lawsuits in the past. Your opinion as an ex-cop, on the other hand, means less than nothing in court.(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 10) (recursion depth : 9) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

If you wanted to know where Progressive's information came from, you could have gone to the link. You're sitting at the computer. Do a little work before you accuse people.
Was your police work also as lacking in research as this?(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 12) (recursion depth : 11) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

Uh huh.
Then you knew earthlingerer's quote came from the article.
So what makes you think the quote came from Progressive's imagination?(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 14) (recursion depth : 13) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

Here's what you said:
If you have nothing better to offer than your imagination, take your nonsense someplace else.
I told you Buckmaster has lawyers who have studied this and won similar cases in court before.
You do not have lawyers of your own, nor do you have any expertise in the matter.
I'm bored with you now.(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 16) (recursion depth : 15) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

Since your comment appeared under "earthlingerer's", I wasn't even aware that you thought you were addressing me, Global_Warmer. I made no comment on the article, nor did I represent myself as an intellectual property attorney or anything else, for that matter. As Beau pointed out, I merely supplied a link. If you wish to perceive that as "passing along someone else's crap", so be it, but now you've soiled your own hands with the same excrement, have you not?

Why is he so upset? Craigslist does cooperate with police stations.
From your link on Craigslist:
"We assist police forces all over the country, including members of Sheriff Dart's department," Buckmaster said."
They even have an Attorney General approved, anti-abuse plan concerning the sex trade.
From your link on Craigslist:
"Craigslist says it has since instituted new measures to prevent the website from being used as a tool in the illegal s*x tr*de and implemented an anti-abuse plan endorsed by attorneys general in Illinois and 39 other states."
Maybe, as a ex-cop, he doesn't really appreciate the extra help?(comment_max_expanded_depth : 55) (comment depth : 11) (recursion depth : 10) (max_comment_reply_depth : 40) (comment_max_render_depth : 55)Reply

I think Global_Warmer is confused. Perhaps he's one of those ex-cops who shoot first and ask questions later.
