In the lawsuit, Cook County has asked for $100,000 in compensation for the man-hours spent by the county for investigation of, well, call girl (and guy) services on the site.

While you're correct that prostitution is illegal, spending $100,000 in Cook County to go after Craigslist is just plain stupid. Cook County has almost 6 million people. I'm absolutely certain the sheriff could find a better way to spend $100,000 in order to "serve and protect" those people.

Gee...I wonder if this headline-grabbing case could have anything to with the fact that Dart will be up for re-election within a year?

        Take it up with Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist, and his lawyers. I imagine they've done their research on the matter.
        
        While I'm sure there is no law specifically stating it, I'm sure they'll be able to cite legal precedents for you.

        No, Progressive gave a link to and article quoting Jim Buckmaster, which included the quote in earthlingerer's comment to which you object. I see nothing on this thread Progressive actually wrote except "Here's the response from Craigslist:".

        You, however, are "full of crap," as I strongly doubt you're as familiar with cases in which websites have been held not to be responsible for user-posted content as Craigslist's lawyers.
        
        Craigslist has been involved in similar lawsuits in the past. Your opinion as an ex-cop, on the other hand, means less than nothing in court.

        Why is he so upset? Craigslist does cooperate with police stations.

        They even have an Attorney General approved, anti-abuse plan concerning the sex trade.
